The State Department is set to designate four Antifa-linked groups that have been operating abroad as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and Specifically Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
It was revealed that there were four Antifa-linked groups that were operating out of Europe, Fox News Digital first reported.
Because of this move, U.S. financial institutions have the authority to freeze assets of FTOs and SDGTs.
Members of these groups can also be barred from coming to the U.S.
The groups are active in Greece, Germany, and Italy have been accused of being behind carrying out bombings and politically motivated attacks.
“Today, the State Department announced its plan to designate four violent Antifa cells as Foreign Terrorist Organizations,” Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt wrote on the social media platform, X.
“It's a major step in our fight against Antifa's terror network. I was proud to work with the administration to make it happen.”
In September of this year, President Donald Trump designated Antifa as a terrorist organization.
“Antifa is a militarist, anarchist enterprise that explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States Government, law enforcement authorities, and our system of law,” Trump’s executive order reads.
“It uses illegal means to organize and execute a campaign of violence and terrorism nationwide to accomplish these goals.”
Schmitt said in a lengthy Twitter post that Antifa is a terrorist movement.
“Antifa is not an "idea." It is a sophisticated, violent terrorist movement—and its network extends far beyond our borders,” he said. “As I have outlined at length in the past, the Antifa violence we see on U.S. soil is driven by a global web of extremist groups.”
