Canada PM Carney Says There's a 'Landing Zone' for U.S.-Canada Tariff Deal

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says talks with the White House on a tariff deal are at a crucial stage and believes there could be scope for a deal.

He told reporters in Prince Edward Island that Canadian households and businesses are anxious and holding back on spending plans due to the uncertainty hovering over the economy from President Trump's hefty tariffs. Trump has set a Aug. 1 deadline for Canada and other countries to reach deals that resolve the current tariff row.

The U.S. reached pacts with Japan and the European Union that would impose a 15% tariff on their exports entering America.

"Negotiations are at an intense phase," Carney said. "There is a landing zone that is possible, but we have to get there, and we'll see what happens."

He reiterated that Canada wouldn't sign a deal unless it benefits the country's workers. Canadians want resolution, "but they want the right kind of resolution."
