British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Chair Samir Shah said in a letter on Monday he does not yet know whether United States President Donald Trump will sue the broadcaster over an edited Panorama segment of Trump's speech. Shah confirmed the BBC has apologized for the edit and is considering offering a personal apology to Trump.
In a letter to the parliamentary Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Shah said he is committed to ensuring "impartial, truthful, evidence-backed journalism," adding that he will strengthen editorial oversight to maintain public trust. He noted that internal reviews and disciplinary actions have already been taken in cases where BBC reporting "fell short" of editorial standards.
His comments come after BBC Director General Tim Davie and News CEO Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday, following allegations that Panorama misleadingly edited footage of Trump's January 6, 2021, speech. Trump later praised the Telegraph for "exposing corrupt journalists."
