Orban: EU 'backed down' on Russian assets

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Wednesday that the European Union "backed down" and that the question of frozen Russian assets will not be on the agenda of tomorrow's meeting of the European Commission.

He called it a "victory" for the "patriots" in the EU, adding the "commission now pushes joint loans" for Ukraine, repeating his country will "not foot the bill for Ukraine’s war."

Orban's comments come as the EU continues to discuss the seizure of immobilized Russian assets, a proposal that faced pushback from several member states. On the other hand, countries including Germany and France endorsed the scheme and called for the funds to be used to boost Ukraine's defenses. Predictably, Russia's Central Bank had sued Euroclear, the primary custodian of Moscow's frozen funds in the EU, seeking €193 billion in damages.
