US, Mexico security talks target border drone threats

The US State Department said on Tuesday that Washington and Mexico are stepping up joint security coordination, with a particular focus on addressing drone-related threats along the border, following a bilateral meeting held on December 11.

According to the department, the second meeting of the US-Mexico Security Implementation Group (SIG) brought together officials from six US agencies and their Mexican counterparts to strengthen cooperation as sovereign partners. A key outcome was a commitment to improve intelligence sharing and connect analytical systems to better anticipate and respond to potential drone attacks in the border region.

The talks also covered broader efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking, target financial networks linked to criminal groups, and disrupt illicit revenue streams. Both sides agreed to intensify cooperation on extraditions, asset seizures and fuel-theft investigations, and to meet again in January 2026.
