Blanche blames Walz, Frey after second Minnesota shooting: ‘Entirely avoidable’

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on Sunday slammed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) after another fatal shooting by federal immigration enforcement officials in the state.

“We feel a ton of sympathy for the family and friends of the deceased, but make no mistake about it, this was entirely avoidable if we had a governor, if we had a mayor, if we had leadership in Washington and over Minnesota that actually cared about their citizens, this would never have happened, because there would be law enforcement on the streets helping [Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)],” Blanche told NBC News’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.”

A man was shot and killed by federal immigration authorities for the second time this month in Minneapolis on Saturday. Customs and Border Patrol agents shot Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who lived in the city, multiple times in the chest.

Pretti’s death follows weeks of turmoil in Minnesota over President Trump’s strict immigration agenda, with an ICE officer also fatally shooting Renee Good in an incident earlier this month, prompting mass outrage. State and city leaders have urged the federal government to reduce its immigration enforcement presence in the state.

Throughout Trump’s second term, his immigration policy has drawn heavy backlash, but that fallout turned into widespread fury after Good’s death.

In a post on the social platform X on, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D) slammed the Trump administration over Saturday’s shooting.

Donald Trump and all your lieutenants who ordered this ICE surge: watch the horrific video of the killing today. The world is watching. Thousands of citizens stopped and harassed. Local police no longer able to do their work. Kids hiding. Schools closed,” Klobuchar wrote.

“Get ICE out of Minnesota NOW. And Republicans in Congress: Stop your silence and stop being complicit,” she added.

Walz , meanwhile, demanded that federal officers get out of his state in the wake of Pretti’s death

“Donald Trump, I call on you once again: Remove this force from Minnesota,” Walz said at a press conference. “They are sowing chaos and violence. We’ve seen deadly violence from federal agents again, and again and again.”

The Hill has reached out to Walz’s office and the city of Minneapolis for comment.
