Philadelphia Mummers Parade suspends string band competition due to high winds

Today’s Mummers Parade string band competition has been suspended because of high winds and safety concerns, organizers announced.

The Philadelphia String Band Association and Mummers Parade officials said sustained 30 mph winds, along with damage during unloading and setup, made it unsafe for performers to compete with props. “Safety of performers is of utmost importance when making this decision,” the statement read.

All string bands will still march in full costume and make-up along Broad Street and in front of City Hall, performing for television, online audiences, and fans in attendance. Marching times and order will remain the same, but performances will proceed without props.

A new date for the judged string band competition will be announced once it is finalized. City officials are urging parade-goers to stay aware of the windy conditions and follow updates.
