White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt outlined on Monday the three steps President Donald Trump asked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to follow to avoid deploying Customs and Border Patrol support to the state.
First, state leaders must "turn over all criminal illegal aliens in local prisons" and jails to federal authorities for deportation. Second, local law enforcement must agree to transfer any legal aliens they arrest to federal custody. Third, local police must assist federal agents in "apprehending illegal aliens wanted for crime."
Leavitt stated that if these "common sense" measures are implemented, ICE and local police can work together without additional federal resources. She also said Trump is calling on Congress to immediately pass legislation ending sanctuary cities. Her statement follows heightened local tensions after US federal agents shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday, the second such killing in the city in less than three weeks.
