US-run oil field in Iraq shuts down after attack

The Ministry of Natural Resources in the semi-autonomous Kurdish area of northern Iraq announced on Friday that production at an oil field in Dohuk province operated by US firm HKN Energy has stopped following a "terrorist" attack from within the country.

"Last night, a terrorist attack was carried out by groups operating outside the law in Iraq against the HKN oil field in the Sarsang area, in Duhok Governorate. The attack caused material damage to the field and forced the suspension of production," the ministry said in a statement.

The Kurdish region, which is home to both US bases and camps of Kurdish Iranian dissident groups that have threatened to launch attacks in Iran, has been the target of dozens of missile and drone attacks by Iran and its allies in Iraq since the start of the latest conflict.
