DoJ said to have started investigating NFL

The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) has started an investigation into the National Football League (NFL), the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. While the exact target of the probe is currently unclear, people familiar with the matter said the DoJ is looking into possible "anticompetitive tactics that harm consumers."

The report said that the investigation could stem from the fragmentation of NFL's broadcasting, as the league struck deals with several streaming services. This led to the Senate antitrust panel chair Mike Lee sending a letter to the DoJ and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) asking them to review relevant regulations and arguing that viewers were forced to spend "almost $1,000 on cable and streaming subscriptions" in order to watch all NFL games last season.
