Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his team have repeatedly tried to contact the White House after United States leader Donald Trump imposed a blockade on the South American country's airspace, CNN reported.
Previously, Trump voiced his intention to close Venezuela's airspace, although legally, only Caracas has the full legal authority to do so. His attempt came amid the ongoing tensions between the two countries over matters such as drug and human trafficking, culminating in the US designating Cartel de los Soles, which it alleged was led by Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization.
Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Trump and Maduro discussed a potential amnesty for the latter if he voluntarily relinquished power. After Trump's blockade, speculations began circulating on social media that Maduro's plane left for Brazil in what was interpreted as a potential escape attempt.
