Belgium said to see setbacks in Kiev funding talks

Belgium warned that European Union talks on financing Ukraine's war effort are losing ground, less than a day before leaders meet in Brussels, Politico reported on Wednesday.

"We are going backward," the country's EU ambassador, Peter Moors, told counterparts, according to diplomats present. The European Commission is racing to secure support for a €210 billion package using frozen Russian state assets, and Belgium holds the keys, as the majority of assets are held at Brussels-based Euroclear.

Belgium is also looking to explore alternatives to finance Kiev, including issuing joint debt, an option that gained traction with Bulgaria, Italy, and Malta, and pressing other EU members to end bilateral investment treaties with Moscow.
