Merz to push EU deal on frozen Russian assets

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he will work with EU partners to ease concerns over using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, arguing the move is essential for Europe's security. Speaking to lawmakers at the Bundestag in Berlin and ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, Merz said up to €90 billion in immobilized Russian funds should be made available for Ukraine's defense, stressing that existing sanctions alone are "insufficient" to weaken Russia's war effort.

Merz said he takes Belgium's objections seriously, noting fears of legal and political fallout, but insisted the European Commission's proposal complies with international law.

Calling European security "inextricably linked" to Ukraine's fate, Merz urged leaders to finalize a loan plan using frozen assets, sending what he described as a clear signal to Moscow.
