Pence NFP pushes to oust RFK Jr. over delayed abortion drug review

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s organization said Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “must go,” accusing the secretary of refusing to review the abortion pill mifepristone.

In a statement posted on the social platform X, Pence’s nonprofit, Advancing American Freedom, said, “HHS Secretary RFK Jr. continues to refuse to review the dangerous chemical abortion pill, mifepristone. Despite the calls of state attorneys general across the country and pro-life promises made to Congress, RFK Jr. has followed in the footsteps of the Obama and Biden administrations by stonewalling pro-life efforts at HHS.”

“RFK Jr. must go,” the group added.

This comes just a week after the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America called for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary to be dismissed after it was reported he was delaying a review of mifepristone until the midterm elections. Anti-abortion hard*liners were already displeased when the FDA approved a new generic form of mifepristone in October.

The White House defended Makary, saying he was “working diligently to ensure that Americans have the best possible, Gold Standard Science study of mifepristone.”

Makary assured Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) in June that he would review mifepristone.

“As with all drugs, FDA continues to closely monitor the postmarketing safety data on mifepristone for the medical termination of early pregnancy,” Makary wrote in a letter. “As the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, I am committed to conducting a review of mifepristone and working with the professional career scientists at the Agency who review this data.”

But Senate Republicans are growing impatient. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, said Makary’s response to inquiries about the review was “unacceptable.”

In a letter to Cassidy, Makary wrote, “As with all approved drugs, when the FDA receives new information regarding adverse events, the agency reviews the new information and, as appropriate, takes necessary action. The FDA continuously reviews reports of adverse events to determine, among other things, whether they are known risks or whether they are signals of emerging safety concerns.”

Makary did not provide any sense of when the mifepristone review would be completed.

During his Senate confirmation hearings, Kennedy aligned his views on abortion with those of President Trump, saying “every abortion is a tragedy.” Kennedy, a scion of the Democratic Kennedy clan, until recently described himself as “pro-choice.” At a campaign event in 2023, he stated, “I don’t think the government has any business telling people what they can or cannot do with their body.”
