Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday that relations with the United States should be based on "loyal cooperation" rather than "confrontation," while stressing his "enormous respect and admiration for the US presidency" and American society.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro in Huelva, Sanchez reiterated that the Spanish government believes the war in Iran is "an extraordinary mistake that we are going to pay for" and "not in accordance with international law." He said ties between allies should take place "with respect, in a spirit of loyal cooperation and on an equal footing."
The remarks follow a diplomatic dispute with US President Donald Trump, who earlier threatened to cut off trade with Spain after Madrid refused to allow the use of the Rota naval base and Moron airbase for operations against Iran.
