Columbia student who praised Mahmoud Khalil arrest in WSJ op-ed received death threats

A Columbia University freshman who wrote an article praising the arrest and possible deportation of campus agitator Mahmoud Khalil was almost immediately besieged with unhinged messages from fellow students calling him “Zionist scum” and urging him to kill himself.

Lucca Ruggieri’s March 18 commentary in the Wall Street Journal voiced full-throated support for President Trump’s efforts to oust troublemakers like Khalil from campus — while questioning how someone who “harbors hostilities” toward American values was even admitted to the prestigious school in the first place.

“It’s like little kids. You say one thing that hurts their feelings, and they have a temper tantrum,” Ruggieri told The Post Thursday. “This is not the sort of person that one of our top institutions should be admitting.”

Ruggieri, 19, an economics major from Pennsylvania who eyed elite institutions like Yale and Harvard before deciding on Columbia, said he did so because it’s “an Ivy League school basically in the center of the universe” — despite its reputation as a “politically controversial place.”

Within hours of the article’s publication, Ruggieri said the rage started flooding in on Sidechat — an anonymous messaging app for Ivy League schools, which requires a student email address to use.

“Someone said, ‘Can we please end this Zionist scum,’ ‘We need to place a fatwa on him.’ Other people sent me messages saying to kill myself, those sort of things,” he said.

A fatwa is a formal ruling issued under Islamic law which, in some cases, is a call for a death sentence.

Someone even took the time to Photoshop his head onto a Nazi SS officer’s body.

The invective Ruggieri received contained numerous jabs at his Italian American heritage, including a wild rumor that he was a descendant of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.

“These people claim to be so woke, but they were making a lot of anti-Italian comments,” he said, blasting the anonymous keyboard warriors as hypocrites.

Columbia protest leader Mahmoud Khalil, second from left, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month and faces deportation over “activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.”AP

“These people cry anytime you say anything about Palestine but when it comes to being hateful towards Italians or Europeans, they have no problem with it.”

Ruggieri said the tone and tenor of the hate messages he received because of his article were reflective of his experience at school navigating the feelings minefield of his sensitive classmates.

“I just see such hypocrisy on campus. You say the most uncontroversial, slightly right-wing opinion, and people would be all over you,” he said.

He said he reported some of the threats he received to the school but hasn’t heard anything back, although he noted the school is on spring break, which could account for the delayed response.

“A lot of it was anonymous, but I think the administration tends to be pretty lax when it comes to these sort of issues, so I’m not expecting much,” Ruggieri said.

A Columbia official told The Post that upon learning of the situation, the university is following up with the student to provide support.

Ruggieri revealed that although the anti-Israel voices tend to be the loudest, he’s far from alone in his opinions, pointing to a climate of fear permeating the staunchly left-leaning campus which tends to stifle voices of dissent.

“I know a lot of people at CU agree with me but they’re petrified to say anything because you get this mob of people who will go after you and call for a fatwa to be placed against you. I think these people are ridiculous, they’re nasty individuals and you need to root them out of these institutions,” he said.

“If you don’t have students speaking out against them, everybody stays quiet because they’re afraid.”

Although he was well aware that his article was throwing a rock at the hornet’s nest, given the politically charged climate at Columbia, Ruggieri said he has no regrets.

“When you get these people reacting like this you know you did something right,” he said. “So if I have a bunch of jihadists coming out and saying that I need to be eliminated or something, I take that as a point of pride.”

Fedex Plunges After Earnings Miss, Slashes Guidance For 3rd Time

FedEx stock tumbled after the company missed EPS expectations and lowered its full-year profit outlook for a third consecutive quarter as mounting economic uncertainty added to sputtering demand already squeezing the parcel company’s bottom line.

For fiscal Q3, the company reported a revenue beat but this was offset by a miss in both profit margins, operating income and EPS:

  • Adjusted EPS $4.51, missing estimate $4.57
  • Revenue $22.2 billion, beating estimate $21.91 billion
    • Federal Express revenue $19.18 billion, beating estimate $18.94 billion
    • FedEx Freight rev. $2.09 billion, beating estimate $2.07 billion
  • Adjusted operating income $1.51 billion, missing estimate of $1.52 billion
  • Adjusted operating margin 6.8%, missing estimates of 7.06%

But what really spooked investors and sent the stock plunging after hours, was the company's guidance which was slashed for the third time in a row, sparking rumblings about a possible CEO change:

  • Sees revenue flat to slightly down YoY, also a downgrade from the previous guidance of flat YoY
  • Adjusted EPS now expected to be in the range of $18 to $18.60 per share this fiscal year, well below the company's prior guidance of $19-20 and also below the consensus estimates of $18.95 on average.

The gloomier outlook shows how FedEx continues to wrestle with sputtering package demand amid mounting signs of economic slowdown. Weakness from industrial customers is weighing on its services that cater to businesses, CFO John Dietrich said in a statement Thursday announcing results.

Commenting on the quarter, CEO Raj Subramaniam said the company faced a “very challenging” operating environment in the period that included a shorter peak shipping season and severe weather. Subramaniam is working to transform the company by combining its Express unit that ships parcels by air with its Ground delivery network. The broader industry has been suffering from a prolonged period of weakness as cash-strapped customers spend on services rather than goods, and a growing preference for slower, cheaper delivery options instead of more profitable express shipping.

FedEx also made the following comments:

  • Freight segment operating results decreased due to lower fuel surcharges, reduced weight per shipment, and fewer shipments, partially offset by higher base yield
  • Federal Express segment operating results improved during the quarter, driven by cost reduction benefits from DRIVE, higher base yield, and increased U.S. and international export volume
  • FedEx Freight segment operating results decreased during the quarter due to lower fuel surcharges, reduced weight per shipment, and fewer shipments, partially offset by higher base yield
  • Progresses FedEx Freight Spin-Off Preparation
  • Still Sees Cost Reductions of $2.2B

FedEx is the latest US company to sound the alarm over weakening consumer confidence and potential fallout from Trump’s escalating trade war, even though the company's stated reason for the miss - lower fuel surcharges - goes directly opposite to what it is accusing Trump of doing, namely pushing prices higher. Maybe Fedex can

The parcel company is considered an economic bellwether because of its exposure to a broad swath of the global economy, from retail to manufacturing.

In kneejerk response, FDX stock tumbled 5% after hours, and is down 12% this year through Thursday’s close. It is now at levels last seen more than a year ago.

Canada's Largest Tesla Showroom Hit By Attack, 80 Vehicles Damaged By Rogue Leftists

The wave of terrorism fueled by far-left groups aligned with the Democratic Party has spread internationally and is potentially linked to another incident in which dozens of Teslas were damaged at a showroom in Ontario, Canada, this week.

Canadian news channel CP24 reports that 80 Tesla vehicles in Hamilton, Ontario, were vandalized at Canada's largest Tesla Service Center at CF Lime Ridge Mall, 999 Upper Wentworth Street.

Here's more from the media outlet:

Hamilton police say they are investigating a "series of mischiefs" after dozens of Tesla vehicles were damaged at a local dealership this week.

According to police, officers were called to a Tesla dealership, located at 999 Upper Wentworth Street, on Wednesday for a report of damage to some of the store's inventory.

Police arrived to discover that "upwards of 80" Tesla vehicles parked outside had sustained damage, including deep scratches and punctured tires.

"Police are currently reviewing CCTV camera footage and are asking the public for their assistance in solving this crime," investigators said in a news release issued Thursday.

A separate report from Tesla blog Drive Tesla provided more color on additional Tesla attacks across Canada:

While this is the largest incident of vandalism involving Tesla vehicles, it's far from the first. In recent weeks, Teslas have increasingly become targets of vandalism and attacks. One of the most significant incidents occurred in Nanaimo, British Columbia where a Tesla Supercharger station was deliberately set on fire last week.

A similarly shocking event took place in London, Ontario, just a few days later when a Tesla Model S was intentionally set on fire at CF Masonville Mall.

Yesterday, climate activists targeted a Tesla store in Montreal, spray painting the facade of the building in a protest against Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

In the US, the unhinged Democratic Party has waged a massive assault on Tesla. Far-left anarcho-terrorists have firebombed Tesla vehicles and Supercharger networks, while leftist NGOs target showrooms with rent-a-protesters

Unhinged Radical Democrat Congresswoman Jasmine Crocket...

Failed 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee wished death on the American company.

Democrats are doubling down with Communist revolutionary tactics in their effort to try to kill an American company. It looks pretty miscalculated for the imploding party polling at record-low levels with voters. This type of revolutionary behavior by the left should further energize the common sense/center-right.

What's particularly alarming is the incident in Canada, which appears to be a foreign group inflicting harm on an American company. Unacceptable.

Melanoma starts evading treatment within hours; here's how to stop it

Researchers have uncovered a stealth survival strategy that melanoma cells use to evade targeted therapy, offering a promising new approach to improving treatment outcomes.

The study, published in Cell Systems and conducted by researchers at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), identifies a non-genetic, reversible adaptation mechanism that allows  to survive treatment with BRAF inhibitors. By identifying and blocking this early response, researchers proposed a  that could delay resistance and enhance the effectiveness of existing treatments.

Cracking the code of melanoma's drug escape

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is often driven by mutations in the BRAF gene, which fuels uncontrolled tumor growth. While BRAF inhibitors (such as vemurafenib) initially halt tumor growth, many tumors quickly adapt and survive treatment, leading to therapy failure.

Unlike traditional resistance driven by , this study uncovers an early, dynamic adaptation process that occurs within hours to days of drug treatment—long before genetic resistance takes hold. Surprisingly, this process does not rely on reactivating the BRAF-ERK pathway, which is the usual resistance mechanism.

Using cutting-edge mass spectrometry-based phosphoproteomics and deep transcriptomics analyses, researchers mapped the molecular shifts in melanoma cells over minutes, hours, and days of BRAF inhibitor treatment.

"We found that while the BRAF-ERK signaling pathway was quickly and durably suppressed, cancer cells did not rely on reactivating ERK to survive. Instead, they triggered an alternative SRC family kinase (SFK) signaling pathway, which promoted cell survival and eventual recovery," said Chunmei Liu, Ph.D., a bioinformatics scientist at ISB and co-first author of the paper.

Turning a weakness into a target

A key discovery in this study came when researchers linked SFK activation to  (ROS), a cellular stress response that builds up under BRAF inhibition. As ROS levels surged, SFK activity spiked, helping melanoma cells withstand treatment. However, this adaptation was reversible—when  was removed, cells returned to their original state.

Recognizing this Achilles heel, the team tested a combination approach: pairing BRAF inhibitors with the SFK inhibitor dasatinib.

"By adding dasatinib, we blocked this adaptive escape mechanism, significantly reducing melanoma  and stabilizing tumors in animal models," said ISB Associate Professor Wei Wei, Ph.D., co-corresponding author.

Importantly, SFK inhibition alone had little effect on melanoma cells, highlighting the need for a strategic combination therapy to suppress melanoma adaptation before resistance fully develops.

"This approach has the potential to prolong the effectiveness of BRAF inhibitors and improve patient outcomes," said ISB President and Professor Jim Heath, Ph.D., another co-corresponding author.

Looking ahead: A path to the clinic

Beyond uncovering a key mechanism of drug adaptation, this research underscores the importance of early intervention to prevent it from happening. It also highlights ROS accumulation and SFK activation as potential biomarkers for identifying patients who may benefit from this combination therapy.

Further preclinical studies and  will be necessary to validate this combination therapy strategy and determine its potential for broader clinical use.

Accenture stock falls after DOGE cancels US contract with consulting giant

Accenture warned Thursday that cost-cutting measures led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency will hurt its bottom line because several multi-million dollar contracts were canceled — sending shares tumbling 7%.

The consultancy giant’s CEO Julie Sweet told investors on an earnings call that the company was experiencing a notable slowdown in securing new contracts from the US government.

US government contracts constituted around 8% of Accenture’s global revenues — or $1.33 billion out of its total revenue of $16.7 billion for the quarter ending Feb. 28 — the company said.

“The new administration has a clear goal to run the federal government more efficiently. During this process, many new procurement actions have slowed, which is negatively impacting our sales and revenue,” Sweet said.

The reduction in government spending comes as part of a broader campaign driven by Musk’s DOGE, which aims to reduce federal expenditures by scrutinizing contracts with consulting companies.

Accenture and nine other major consultancies including Deloitte, IBM and Booz Allen Hamilton have been directly impacted by this policy shift.

Shares of IBM have fallen by more than 8% in the last month, while Booz Allen Hamilton stock is down more than 6% during the same period.

Deloitte is a privately held company.

A federal filing disclosed last week indicated that a previously awarded Accenture contract, which had the potential to bring in up to an additional $5 million by 2027, was abruptly “terminated for convenience.”

Shares of Accenture fell after the company told investors that its finances were being impacted by DOGE cuts.

This contract had already generated around $10 million in revenue since its inception in 2021 and marked the 10th such contract lost by Accenture under the Trump administration’s new guidelines.

The General Services Administration, the government body responsible for overseeing federal procurement activities, stated that agencies must clearly demonstrate the value and necessity of their consulting contracts.

If unable to justify these agreements, departments are now required to terminate them as part of the ongoing efficiency measures.

Sweet emphasized the critical nature of Accenture’s federal projects but acknowledged future uncertainties.

DOGE cuts are “negatively impacting our sales and revenue,” Accenture CEO Julie Sweet told investors on an earnings call.REUTERS

“While we continue to believe our work for federal clients is mission critical, we anticipate ongoing uncertainty as the government’s priorities evolve and these assessments unfold,” she cautioned.

Despite the turbulence, Sweet said she expects contracts with the government to increase in the future.

“We see major opportunities over time for us to help consolidate, modernize and reinvent the federal government to drive a whole new level of efficiency,” she said.

Accenture originated as Andersen Consulting, the business and technology consulting division of Arthur Andersen, before formally separating and rebranding as Accenture in 2001.

Initially based in Chicago, the company relocated its headquarters to Dublin, Ireland, in 2009 — citing a more business-friendly tax environment.

Since then, Accenture has grown into a global leader in consulting and technology services, operating in over 120 countries.

President Trump last week accused Ireland of drawing pharmaceutical jobs and tax revenues away from the US, criticizing the country’s tax policies that allow companies to report profits there without physically producing all their medicines in Ireland.

Multinational companies base their headquarters in Ireland due to its low corporate tax rate of 12.5%, business-friendly regulations and access to the European Union market.

Major American corporations such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Pfizer and Intel have established their European or international headquarters there in order to take advantage of tax incentives, a skilled workforce and favorable intellectual property laws.

While Ireland’s tax policies have faced scrutiny, the country remains an attractive destination for global businesses due to its stable economy and strategic location.

The Post has sought comment from the White House and Accenture.
