Chinese troops caught fighting for Russia in Ukraine as Kyiv pushes into Belgorod

Two Chinese nationals were caught fighting for Russia in eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday, warning of the growing friendship between two of America’s top adversaries.

The two Chinese citizens were “fighting as part of the Russian army” in Donetsk — and Kyiv intelligence indicates they may not be alone.

“We have information suggesting that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupier’s units than just these two,” Zelensky said in a message on X. “We are currently verifying all the facts — intelligence, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the relevant units of the Armed Forces are working on it.”

“I have instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to immediately contact Beijing and clarify how China intends to respond to this,” he added.

While it was immediately unclear how the Chinese troops ended up in Russia’s trenches, Zelensky said the addition of foreign forces does not support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims of being interested in a possible cease-fire or peace deal.

“Russia’s involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war,” he said.

“He is looking for ways to continue fighting.”

Zelensky then called on the US to take action if China is making a concerted effort to help Russia continue its invasion of his war-torn country.

“This definitely requires a response. A response from the United States, Europe, and all those around the world who want peace.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the involvement of Chinese troops is contradictory to Beijing’s claims of neutrality and desire for an end to the conflict.

“Chinese citizens fighting as part of Russia’s invasion army in Ukraine puts into question China’s declared stance for peace and undermines Beijing’s credibility as a responsible permanent member of the UN Security Council,” Sybiha wrote on social media.

Their capture comes months after North Korea sent roughly 10,000 troops to Kursk, Russia, to fight with Putin’s troops against Kyiv’s first incursion into the territory in August.

That campaign, which lasted about seven months before Ukraine began to withdraw in March, led to the deaths of roughly a third of the North Korean forces deployed, according to Ukrainian estimates.

North Korea recently sent another contingent of about 4,000 troops to re-augment their forces helping Russia.

While Ukrainians have given back Kursk, they have launched a new offensive into Russia this month, with Zelensky confirming on Monday that Kyiv’s forces have penetrated Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.

“We continue to carry out active operations in the border areas on enemy territory, and that is absolutely just — war must return to where it came from,” he said on Monday.

Over 900K migrants who entered US with Biden-era CBP One app told to ‘self-deport’

The Department of Homeland Security is urging nearly 1 million asylum seekers who entered the US through the CBP One app to “immediately” begin to “self-deport.”

“Canceling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people to secure our borders and protect national security,” a DHS spokesperson said, following anecdotal reports from migrants that they had been told to return to their countries of origin.

The CBP One smartphone app launched in January 2023 and through December 2024 was used to admit more than 936,500 people claiming persecution in their homelands, according to DHS data.

Users were granted permission to live and work for two years in the US as they awaited the outcome of often backlogged local immigration proceedings.

“Formal termination notices have been issued, and affected aliens are urged to voluntarily self-deport using the CBP Home App. Those who refuse will be found, removed, and permanently barred from reentry,” the DHS spokesperson said.

President Joe Biden’s administration launched the app to tamp down record-high illegal border crossings, but congressional Republicans accused Biden of illegally exceeding the traditional “parole” authority, which they said could not be granted categorically.

The Trump DHS spokesperson said: “The Biden Administration abused the parole authority to allow millions of illegal aliens into the US which further fueled the worst border crisis in US history.”

Precise data about the number of people impacted by the move are unclear for a variety of reasons — including the fact that some may have already been granted asylum, while others may be shielded by additional legal protections.

The CBP One app was launched with a goal of facilitating the orderly movement of would-be illegal border crossers into the US from northern Mexico. Although geared to nationalities such as Haitians and Venezuelans flocking to the southwest border, Mexicans and citizens of other countries could participate.

Migrants who entered the US as part of programs for Afghan and Ukrainian citizens are not impacted by the latest announcement, according to DHS.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also is revoking parole for 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who flew to the US at their own expense with a financial sponsor — effective April 24.

Additionally, the Trump administration is moving to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 600,000 Venezuelans and about 500,000 Haitians — though that effort is paused by litigation.

TPS grants 18-month reprieves for residents of designated countries and can apply to all residents of a particular nationality living within the US at the time of the protection’s declaration

Illegal US-Mexico border crossings have plummeted since Trump took office in January with pledges to launch the largest mass deportation campaign in American history.

That drive initially has focused on migrants accused of committing crimes — with Trump coercing their home countries to accept deportation flights, while sending some to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and others to a mega-prison in El Salvador.

Trump admin insists deadline to end NYC congestion pricing still April 20 — despite MTA agreement

The Trump administration is sticking by its deadline for New York to end congestion pricing — despite an agreement with the MTA to apparently keep the toll cameras on until the fall.

A US Department of Transportation spokesperson, in a post on an X account, lambasted reports that the feds and MTA officials agreed to keep the $9 tolls at least temporarily in place.

“This is a complete lie by the elitist New York liberal media, whose rich buddies love the idea of pricing poor people out of the city,” the post reads.

“The truth is simple agreements on judicial timelines have no bearing on the underlying merits of our case or our position.”

The statement came after court papers made public Monday laid out a deal that would prevent a judge from making a decision on the case until the middle of summer, perhaps even until October.

DOT officials told the MTA they did not plan “at present” on seeking an injunction to stop the program, the papers showed.

The DOT’s post echoed the combative tone struck by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who set the April 20 deadline in a post that accused Gov. Kathy Hochul of disrespect and threatened to cut off federal funding to the MTA.

“USDOT’s deadline for stopping toll collection has not changed,” it said. “Make no mistake – the Trump Administration and USDOT will not hesitate to use every tool at our disposal in response to non-compliance later this month.”

Russia and US to hold new round of consultations in Istanbul on April 10

The U.S. State Department on Tuesday announced that American and Russian delegations will meet for a second time in Istanbul on April 10 to "solely" discuss stabilizing bilateral embassy operations.

Speaking at a daily press briefing, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the discussions will not include any political or security issues.

"Ukraine is not, absolutely not on the agenda," Bruce said.

"These talks are solely focused on our embassy operations, not on normalizing a bilateral relationship overall, which can only happen, as we've noted, once there is peace between Russia and Ukraine," she added.

A diplomatic source earlier said the talks will take place at the Russian consulate in Istanbul.

In February, Russian and U.S. teams held talks in Istanbul to try to restore normal functioning of their embassies. The talks, focused narrowly on conditions for each other's diplomats, provided an early test of the two countries' ability to reset wider relations.

Russia and the United States have expelled diplomats and limited the appointment of new staff at each other's missions in tit-for-tat measures over the past decade, leaving their embassies thinly staffed.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian state-run TASS news agency reported that delegations from Russia and the U.S. would meet for consultations in Istanbul in the coming days, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Russian delegation will be led by Alexander Darchiev, recently appointed as Russia's ambassador to the U.S., while the U.S. delegation will be headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Sonata Coulter, TASS reported.

Both delegations will be made up of only diplomats and the talks will focus on normalising the operations of the diplomatic missions of both countries, it quoted Russia's Foreign Ministry as saying.

U.S. and Russian officials also met in February in the Saudi capital Riyadh to discuss how to end the war in Ukraine, part of a broader rapprochement with Moscow sought by the new Trump administration.

Trump says EU will have to buy energy from US

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday said selling energy to the European Union would be a key focus as his administration seeks to eliminate a trade deficit with the bloc.

"The European Union's been very bad to us," Trump told reporters at the White House, accusing European nations of not buying enough U.S. goods.

"They're going to have to buy their energy from us, because they need it and they're going to have to buy it from us. They can buy it, we can knock off $350 billion in one week."

CorMedix expects Q1 sales above estimates, lifts H1 outlook

  • CorMedix (NASDAQ:CRMD) expects preliminary net revenue of $39M (consensus estimate: $32.2M) and adjusted EBITDA to exceed $22.5M for the first quarter of 2025.
  • Since providing initial guidance, the company received larger than expected orders during the final week of March, and has also obtained additional visibility into inventory levels on hand at some of our current purchasing customers. Based on this, CorMedix has lifted its H1 for net sales to existing purchasing customers to a revised range of $62M to $70M.
  • For Q2, the company currently expects net sales from existing purchasing customers to be lower than that in Q1 due to the timing of shipments to those customers between quarters. This does not suggest an anticipated decrease in patient utilization in the second quarter or the second half of 2025, the company said.
  • Shares of CorMedix (NASDAQ:CRMD) gained nearly 16% premarket on Tuesday.
