Kennedy to address Gavi vaccine event amid funding pullback

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, a long-time vaccine skeptic, is set to speak this week at a fundraising event for Gavi, a public-private partnership which helps buy vaccines for the world's poorest children, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

President Donald Trump asked Kennedy to represent the United States at the conference in Brussels on Wednesday, where Gavi will secure funding for its operations for the next five years, one of the sources told Reuters. The Trump administration has previously indicated that it planned to cut its funding for Gavi, representing around $300 million annually.

The source said it was unlikely that Kennedy would commit any new U.S. funding contribution and would most likely discuss "the restructuring of foreign assistance."

Trump has cut foreign aid programmes by around 80% since taking office at the beginning of this year, as part of his "America First" policy agenda.

Kennedy, who spent decades as a public figure sowing doubt over the safety and efficacy of vaccines before becoming the top U.S. health official, is set to appear via video, another of the sources said.

Gavi is aiming to raise $9 billion for its work from 2026-2030 at the summit, amid a pullback by governments - including the group's largest sovereign donor, the United Kingdom - which also plan to cut aid budgets. The event is co-hosted by the European Union and the Gates Foundation, both of which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Gavi works alongside governments to fund the purchase of vaccines to prevent deadly diseases, from measles to diphtheria. Earlier this year, its chief executive said losing U.S. funding could lead to around 1.2 million additional deaths over the next five years.

The group declined to comment on whether any U.S. officials would attend the summit this week. The U.S. Department for Health and Human Services was not immediately available for comment.

Kennedy has been changing U.S. domestic vaccine policy since his appointment earlier this year. He recently fired all the members of a US vaccine advisory panel, and replaced them with members of his own choosing, including several who share anti-vaccine sentiments.

Kennedy appeared at a World Health Organization meeting in May via video, where he called the organization "moribund" and urged others to follow the U.S. lead and quit, as Trump announced on the first day of his presidency. Trump's announcement had set a 12-month notice period for exiting the WHO; the U.S. is the WHO's biggest financial backer.

WhatsApp banned on US House of Representatives devices, memo shows

Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp messaging service has been banned from all U.S. House of Representatives devices, according to a memo sent to all House staff on Monday.

The notice said the "Office of Cybersecurity has deemed WhatsApp a high risk to users due to the lack of transparency in how it protects user data, absence of stored data encryption, and potential security risks involved with its use."

The memo, from the chief administrative officer, recommended using other messaging apps, including Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Teams platform, Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s Wickr, Signal, and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iMessage and FaceTime.

Meta (NASDAQ:META) disagreed with the move "in the strongest possible terms," a company spokesperson said, noting that the platform provides a higher level of security than the other approved apps.

In January, a WhatsApp official said Israeli spyware company Paragon Solutions had targeted scores of its users, including journalists and members of civil society.

The House has banned other apps from staff devices in the past, including the short video app TikTok in 2022 due to security issues.

Roche's Hemlibra follow-up set for phase 3 in haemophilia A

Roche's Hemlibra treatment for haemophilia A is one of its top-selling drugs, making almost $5 billion last year, and the company has now lined up what looks like an impressive successor.

The pharma group has presented phase 1/2 results with new candidate NXT007 at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) congress in Washington DC that suggest it is able to normalise blood clotting in people with haemophilia A.

Hemlibra (emicizumab) is an antibody that mimics the action of factor VIII, while NXT007 is a bispecific antibody – derived from emicizumab – that brings together factor IXa and factor X and is designed to offer greater potency and efficacy while requiring less frequent dosing.

In the NXTAGE trial, 30 patients with haemophilia A and no inhibitors were administered NXT007 as a subcutaneous injection every two to four weeks during an induction period, followed by injections every two to six weeks in a maintenance phase. In contrast, Hemlibra is initially dosed once a week by injection and once every two or four weeks thereafter.

Data reported at ISTH showed that patients receiving the two highest doses of NXT007 (0.7mg/kg and 1.08mg/kg) had no reported bleeds, as well as no clotting side effects, over 16 weeks of follow-up.

There were two treatment discontinuations, both in the low-dose group (0.072mg/kg), one of which was a result of the patient developing antibodies (inhibitors) against NXT007. One other patient also developed inhibitors, but remained on treatment. In both cases, the inhibitors did not show any cross-reactivity with Hemlibra.

NXT007 is an important project for Roche, given Novo Nordisk recently reported phase 3 data with a similarly acting bispecific, codenamed Mim8, last year that suggested it could match Hemlibra with less frequent dosing. The company has previously said it is anticipating the first regulatory approval for Mim8 later this year.

Roche's chief medical officer, Levi Garraway, said the results were "promising" and suggest that NXT007 could build on the success of Hemlibra, which established "a new standard of care" for haemophilia A.

The next steps for the programme include additional phase 2 data, due later this year, and the start of a phase 3 programme based on three studies that will get underway in 2026. The latter will include a head-to-head comparison with Hemlibra.

Russia Ready To Help Iran, Says Has 'Every Right' To Nuclear Energy Program

The Kremlin has announced Monday that Russia stands ready to help Iran in its ongoing conflict with Israel and the United States in the Middle East, based on specific requests.

Such assistance "all depends on what Iran needs," presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained, as quoted in TASS. "We have offered our mediation efforts. This is concrete. We have stated our position, which is also a very important form of support for the Iranian side."

"Going forward, everything will depend on what Iran needs at this moment," Peskov continued, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is currently in Moscow, preparing to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

"Just today, the Iranian Foreign Minister [Abbas Araghchi] will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where they will be able to exchange views in the wake of this traumatic escalation," Peskov stated. That's when he made clear, "And, in fact, the Iranian side will be able to inform us about its proposals and its vision of the current situation."

It is highly unlikely that Moscow would actually give any level of direct military assistance, but it could possibly come in the form of safety, containment, or logistical help at now damaged nuclear facilities, following American forces' weekend bombings of three key sites.

Earlier in the week, the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that a 'number of countries' are now ready to supply Iran with 'their own nuclear warheads' - but this is typical of the former Russian president's hyperbole and bravado aimed at the West.

Also on Monday, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova explained Moscow's view that Iran has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, like any other country.

In reference to something that US Vice President JD Vance previously said about Russia and China not wanting Iran to develop nuclear weapons, she said, "First, Russia and China do not want the United States to interfere in their internal affairs in any form. And anyone making statements on behalf of, but not on behalf of, our two countries would do well to start with this."

"For example, not to supply the Kyiv terrorist regime with deadly missiles, not to militarize Taiwan, etc. Secondly, Russia and China speak for themselves: the corresponding statements about the aggression of Israel and the United States were published by the Foreign Ministries of both countries," she continued.

"Thirdly, Russia and China believe that Iran (like any other country) can and should determine its own strategy for the development of nuclear energy in accordance with international law, in particular the NPT, and other states can also base their attitude towards this on an international legal basis."

And then, Zakharova said, "Fourthly, Iran created peaceful nuclear energywhich it has every right to do, and did not create nuclear weapons, which has been repeatedly confirmed by both Tehran itself and the IAEA."

Then a history lesson:

Fifth, a little history. Perhaps the very first time the idea of a nuclear-weapon-free Middle East was voiced was in a statement by the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union, then the official voice of Moscow, on January 22, 1958: “The Near and Middle East should and can become a zone of peace where there are not and should not be nuclear and missile weapons, a zone of good neighborliness and friendly cooperation between states.” In 1974, the same Iran that is now under attack from Israel and the United States initiated a discussion of this topic at the UN General Assembly, which ended with the adoption of a resolution on the "Establishment of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in the Middle East." 128 countries voted "for," including the Soviet Union and the United States. Israel abstained from voting. The USSR/Russia systematically advocated the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

Iranian state media was quick to pick up these latest statements as Russia is standing with a regional ally with which it has had increased defense and trade ties, particularly since the start of the Ukraine war.

Ukraine and much of the West, meanwhile, see both Iran and North Korea as 'rogue states' who are helping fuel Putin's war against Ukraine, and these have come under ratcheting US-led sanctions alongside Moscow.
