Billionaire Dem donors Bloomberg, Diller distance from ‘ineffectual’ DNC, 'won’t fork over more cash'

Billionaire Dem donors including Barry Diller and Michael Bloomberg are refusing to fork over more cash for now to the party’s main fundraising committee because there’s now a “broad consensus” it’s “ineffectual,’’ sources said.

The Democratic National Committee has been plagued by infighting and defections as the party remains virtually leaderless since President Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election — prompting some once-reliable and deep-pocketed donors to yank funding for the time being.

“For a variety of reasons, I have no intention of donating to the DNC,” media mogul Diller told The Post last week.

Diller, chairman of such holdings as the Internet and media behemoth IAC, seethed in his just-released memoir “Who Knew” that former President Joe Biden and his administration used a bait-and-switch tactic when it came to his promise of restoring the “soul of the nation.”

“I think the biggest crime of the Biden administration is that it came in with a pledge to restore a more civilized, selfless, and uplifting manner of governance and instead let us all down with its progressive elitism, personal ego, and cynical behavior. Such a shame,” Diller wrote

Sources close to Bloomberg, a news tech titan and New York City’s former mayor, said he also is wary of giving to the DNC again, while others have expressed skepticism that hedge-fund manager Marc Lasry is in a hurry to make up the funding.

During the 2023-24 election cycle, Bloomberg gave $413,000 to the DNC; Diller donated $330,400; and Lasry contributed $133,400.

Lasry hinted that ultimately he will give again to the DNC — but didn’t specify when. A rep for Bloomberg declined to comment.

“There is just a broad consensus that the DNC is ineffectual and not where we should be giving money,” said a longtime former donor.

“But it’s not surprising,” the source said. “‘I don’t belong to an organized party, I’m a Democrat’ is a longtime joke for a reason.

“We’re so decentralized,” the source added. “The DNC has always been a joke. If you are a megadonor looking to shape the direction of the party, don’t give to the DNC. At this point, the shape of the DNC is just embarrassing.”

The drop-off in fundraising has left some party bosses questioning whether the committee will have to take out loans, though DNC Chairman Ken Martin has expressed doubt that will happen.

A DNC rep said that many long-time donors have already contributed to the DNC this year as part of a record-breaking donation drive in the first four months under Martin.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is another billionaire who has opted not to support the fundraising committee at the moment, sources said.AP

But another donor who told The Post his wallet is now closed to the committee said Martin may have his head in the sand.

“People are too embarrassed to admit this,” the source said. “I’m a lifelong Dem who raised a ton of money, and I won’t give them a nickel — and I’m not alone.

“I’m not even a Democrat anymore. The Dems should kidnap Elizabeth Warren and take her to Mexico,” the source said of the lefty Massachusetts senator. “This is how Trump got [his win] — not because Trump is loved but because his ideas are popular.”

Other sources pointed out that recent Democratic fundraising has been largely channeled into New York City’s mayoral race, with party leaders increasingly concerned about the prospect of self-described socialist Zohran Mamdani overtaking ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the primary contest.

The DNC’s most recent financial filings, released last week, revealed that it bled nearly $3 million alone from its already dwindling reserves during the month of May, with the committee’s pot of gold now standing at a precarious $15 million.

Should Mamdani win, that could further erode support for the DNC from big donors who are concerned their money will simply go to socialists, sources noted.

For its part, the DNC has denied that donor support is wavering. In a statement released Friday, it touted what it called “record fundraising” and the “highest in DNC history under any chair’s first four months” for Martin.

The DNC told Axios that the nearly $40 million it garnered between February and May of 2025 “surpasses the $37 million raised under Jaime Harrison’s leadership in those same months in 2021.”

“In the early and mid 2010’s, some big-money donors already tried not funding the DNC and state parties, instead funding groups outside of the Party, which hollowed out the critical work that the Party does while putting us behind the eight-ball when it came to critical coordination during the 2016 presidential election,” warned one Democratic strategist.

“We all know how that story ended — Donald Trump won the Presidency and the Democratic Party fell to an all-time low at every level of government. The Democratic Party needs a fully-funded Party to fight Donald Trump.”

Former President Joe Biden and his administration are under fire for vowing to restore the “soul of the nation” — then allegedly going so progressive that they only widened rifts.AP
The Republican National Committee, on the other hand, had a net-positive cash flow for May. It added more than $5 million to its treasure trove, bringing its total funds to more than $72 million.

These new numbers put the RNC’s cash stash at almost five times the size of the DNC’s. And it’s welcome news for Republicans.

Home Depot founder Ken Langone, a longtime GOP donor, was thrilled by the accounting and said to friends, “We don’t have to worry as the GOP party because the Dem positions are so stupid they’ll never raise money again,” sources said.

Border agents warned on possible terrorist ‘sleeper cells’ after Biden admin let in over 700 Iranian illegals

Customs and Border Protection is warning agents about possible terrorist “sleeper cells” in the US after more than 700 Iranian nationals were let into the US after crossing illegally under the Biden administration, according to a leaked memo obtained by The Post.

Iranian migrants are considered to be “special interest aliens” and are supposed to undergo additional vetting by the feds for possible terrorism ties.

Under the Biden administration, over 1,500 Iranian migrants were caught crossing the border illegally and nearly 50% of them were released into the US, according to Fox News.

Border agents are now being put on high alert of the possibility of Iranians using the border to carry out attacks on the US following the Trump administration’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites over the weekend.

CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott cited “Iran’s hatred for the United States and their desire to harm America and Americans,” in Saturday’s memo to border agents.

“Over the past four years, thousands of Iranian national have been documented entering the United States illegally and countless more were likely in the known and unknown got-a-ways,” Scott wrote.

“Though we have not received any specific credible threats to share with you all currently, the threat of sleeper cells or sympathizers acting on their own, or at the behest of Iran has never been higher,” he added.

Scott asked border agents “to remain hyper vigilant and continue to take appropriate precautions, while maintaining a heightened level of situational awareness both on and off-duty.”

The Trump administration carried out surprise strikes Saturday night on Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” in an effort to cripple the Islamic Republic’s nuclear weapons development.

Trump warned Iran against retaliation following the weekend’s airstrikes on nuclear facilities.

The alert comes after Iranian officials warned President Trump during last week’s G7 summit that they would use “sleeper cells” to launch attacks on American soil if the US chose to attack, two US officials told NBC News.

On Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security issued a terrorism alert that warned officials to be on the lookout for Iranian-led attacks over the next three months by terror cells inspired to retaliate following Saturday night’s strike.

“The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland,” DHS said in a statement.

The FBI similarly warned the Iran has a history of targeting US interests, “and they are likely to increase their efforts in the near term,” the New York Times reported.

“I can tell you we are on high alert and everyone is looking at that very closely,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said Monday at a House Appropriations Committee hearing.

Officials have also warned that both cyberattacks and antisemitic acts are likely to increase.

The NYPD has also been placed on high alert and Gov. Kathy Hochul has increased security at the MTA and Port Authority.

On Monday, Iran launched a missile attack at the US military base near Doha, Qatar — though the Iranians reportedly warned of the attack in advance and all the projectiles were shot down before reaching their targets.

Trump announces Israel and Iran have agreed to cease-fire ending ‘12 Day War’

President Trump announced in a Monday evening post on Truth Social that Israel and Iran have agreed in principle to a cease-fire that would halt what he branded “the 12 Day War.”

“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!” Trump wrote.

“Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.”

Trump added: “On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.’ This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!”

There was no immediate confirmation from Israel or Iran that a halt to the fighting was in prospect.

The name “12-Day War” would reflect a military triumph for Israel in its campaign against Iranian nuclear facilities — and is a callback to the Six-Day War of 1967, in which the Jewish state swiftly defeated a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt, Jordan and Syria.

Vice President JD Vance hailed the development in a Fox News interview minutes after the announcement.

“The president without — knock on wood — having a single American casualty, obliterated the Iranian nuclear program,” he said.

“We have to talk to Iran and, of course, Israel about what the future holds … to build a long-term settlement.”

Trump announced the apparent breakthrough hours after Iran lobbed rockets at an American military facility in Qatar in symbolic retribution for Saturday’s US bomb-and-missile attack on three Iranian nuclear sites.

The president said Tehran provided a heads-up in advance of its response and most of the rockets were shot down before reaching their target, the Al Udeid Air Base southwest of Qatar’s capital, Doha.

The conflict began June 13 with Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities, coupled with a wave of assassinations of scientists, hardline nuclear negotiators and military leaders.

Israel swiftly established superiority over the skies of Iran, but was unable to completely destroy the country’s Fordow nuclear enrichment facility with US-sourced 2,000-pound bombs — setting in motion Trump’s decision to authorize American B-2 bombers to drop 14 “bunker buster” 30,000-pound explosives on the site.

A damage assessment is ongoing, but the president has insisted all three facilities targeted inside Iran were “totally destroyed.”

This is a breaking story. Please check back for more information.

Oil Drops, Stocks Look Up on Trump Ceasefire Talk

Oil sank and US stock-index futures climbed after President Donald Trump announced a tentative ceasefire between Israel and Iran, raising hopes that the worst of the Middle East conflict has passed.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell as much as 5% after Trump’s comments on his Truth Social platform. The statement followed Iran’s strikes on a US base in Qatar, which were seen as largely symbolic and unlikely to trigger broader economic fallout, pushing the S&P 500’s gain to 1% on Monday and sending oil below $70.

Healthcare-Associated Infections Affect Over Half of European Long-Term Care Residents

In a 12-month longitudinal analysis of long-term care facility residents across European countries, 57% experienced at least one healthcare-associated infection (HAI), with respiratory tract and urinary tract infections being the most common and leading to significant hospitalisations and deaths.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Researchers conducted a longitudinal cohort study across nine European countries to examine the incidence of HAIs and their associated hospitalisations and mortality in residents of long-term care facilities.
  • They analysed 3029 residents (mean age, 80.9 years; 68% women) who stayed in their facilities, including general nursing homes, residential homes, and mixed facilities, throughout the 12-month study period.
  • Data were collected via standardised questionnaires covering facility characteristics, resident demographics, and details about HAIs; infections acquired within the facility or during temporary discharge were included.
  • The primary outcome was the incidence of HAIs; secondary outcomes included HAI-related hospitalisations (occurring between the onset and resolution) and HAI-associated deaths.

TAKEAWAY:

  • Overall, 57% of the residents experienced at least one HAI during follow-up, with an incidence rate of 1.8 (95% CI, 0.9-3.3) per 1000 resident days.
  • Respiratory tract infections were the most common HAIs (28.9%; 95% CI, 27.3-30.5), followed by urinary tract infections (18.7%; 95% CI, 17.2-20.3) and COVID-19 (17.6%; 95% CI, 16.5-18.8).
  • The incidence of HAI-related hospitalisations was 0.09 (95% CI, 0.05-0.21) per 1000 resident days; the highest incidence was observed for respiratory tract infections, followed by urinary tract infections and COVID-19.
  • Overall, 4.5% of HAIs were fatal, and respiratory tract infections were the most common cause, accounting for 2.3% of deaths.

IN PRACTICE:

"Nevertheless, these data shed important light on a highly relevant topic within a health-care setting that is often neglected," the authors of a commentary wrote.

"There is a need for ongoing surveillance of infections, work to validate surveillance definitions, and more epidemiological data (eg, pathogen-specific burden, contribution of outbreak vs sporadic infections, and added burden of antimicrobial resistance)," they added.

SOURCE:

This study was led by Enrico Ricchizzi, PhD, Settore Innovazione nei Servizi Sanitari e Sociali, Regione Emilia-Romagna, Bologna, Italy. It was published online on June 16, 2025, in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

LIMITATIONS:

This study was limited by variability in implementation of the survey across participating facilities and the biased selection of long-term care facilities. The diverse types of facilities included introduced heterogeneity. Moreover, this study did not assess the effect of infection prevention measures or available local resources at each facility.

DISCLOSURES:

This study was supported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The authors declared having no competing interests.
