Iran would accept Trump's offer to meet soon, New York Times reports

Iran would accept U.S. President Donald Trump's offer to meet soon, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing a senior Iranian official.

The newspaper, citing the official, added that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi would accept such a meeting to discuss a cease-fire with Israel.

Trump, who has indicated he wants talks to focus on the Iranian nuclear program, said on Monday that he might send U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff or Vice President JD Vance to meet Iranian officials.

Canada could produce first LNG by this weekend, sources say

Canada is on the verge of producing its first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) this weekend from the LNG Canada export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, according to Reuters, citing several sources familiar with the plant’s startup.

The facility began cooling down Train 1 on Monday, and barring any unforeseen difficulties, the first LNG production is expected between Saturday and Sunday, a source close to the operations said.

LNG Canada informed staff last Friday that the cooldown process for Train 1 would continue until Thursday, with extensive flaring expected during this period.

When fully operational, the facility will have the capacity to export 14 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. However, initial operations will only utilize about 25% of the plant’s capacity, sources indicated.

The Kitimat facility represents a significant milestone as the first LNG export terminal in Canada and the first in North America with direct access to the Pacific coast. This strategic location will substantially reduce shipping times to Asian markets compared to other North American LNG export facilities.

LNG Canada confirmed to Reuters on Tuesday that the first LNG will be produced from Train 1, with initial cargo shipments expected by the middle of 2025. An LNG tanker is reportedly en route to collect the first cargo from the new plant.

This development marks an important step for Canada’s entry into the global LNG market, with several other Canadian LNG projects still in development.

'Oil price shock looming as Israel-Iran conflict threatens critical global shipping'

If the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran significantly cuts supply in the global oil market, prices could surge to as much as $120 a barrel due to a potential threat to a significant shipping lane, according to industry experts.

The price of West Texas Intermediate, a key crude oil benchmark, is sitting around a one-year high, while global benchmark Brent Crude is nearing a five-month high Wednesday as the conflict between Israel and Iran enters its sixth day.

President Donald Trump met with his national security team Tuesday to discuss the escalating conflict, sparking speculation the U.S. could be preparing to join the attack, creating more volatility in the market, according to Ewa Manthey, commodities strategist at ING Financial Service.

But Manthey said the "key worry for the market" is the potential for disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The waterway is not only wide enough to handle the world's largest crude oil tankers. It is considered one of the world's most important oil chokepoints, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA)

ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods echoed those concerns, saying that while global oil supply is sufficient to withstand a disruption to Iranian exports, the greater concern is the potential impact on oil shipments through that waterway, which moves almost a third of global seaborne oil trade.

In 2024, 20 million barrels of oil per day, about 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption, flowed through the waterway. There are also very few alternative options to move oil out of the strait if it is closed, according to the EIA.

A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push prices to $120 per barrel, according to Manthey. But if disruptions persist toward the end of the year, she noted that Brent could trade to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150 per barrel reached in 2008.

Trump and Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

"If this occurs, we would need to see governments tap into their strategic petroleum reserves," Manthey said, noting that it includes the U.S., which sits on more than 400 million barrels of crude oil in its strategic petroleum reserves.

Manthey said another solution would be if the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) tapped into its spare production capacity of more than 5 million barrels per day.

"While they are in the process of bringing supply back online, a disruption to Iranian supply may prompt them to bring this supply back at an even quicker pace," Manthey said.

Putin to Address Key Global Issues at St. Petersburg Forum

Putin to address global issues at the St. Petersburg forum, focusing on Israel-Iran mediation, Russia's Ukraine strategy, and economic initiatives.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to engage with international journalists on Wednesday during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Putin has planned a roundtable discussion with senior news executives from global news agencies, including The Associated Press. Among various topics, he is anticipated to outline Moscow's stance on the conflict between Israel and Iran. This follows his offer to mediate the dispute during a weekend call with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Russia has historically walked a careful line in the Middle East, balancing its friendly relations with Israel while cultivating strong economic and military ties with Iran. This policy potentially positions Moscow as a key player in brokering a resolution to the confrontation.

Observers will pay close attention to Putin's remarks for insights into his strategy regarding the ongoing three-year conflict in Ukraine, where Russia has intensified its aerial and ground attacks along the extensive front line exceeding 1,000 kilometers. Putin has dismissed Trump's proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, instead making it contingent on Ukraine halting its mobilization efforts and freezing Western arms supplies.

The Russian president has utilized the annual forum to promote Russia's economic accomplishments and attract foreign investment. Historically, Western business leaders attended the event, but they have largely stayed away since Putin's deployment of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, with attendance now mostly from business personalities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

During the forum, Putin is expected to convene with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who currently leads the New Development Bank established by the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). Discussions with top officials from China, South Africa, Bahrain, and the leader of OPEC are also on the agenda.

On Friday, Putin is set to participate in a panel discussion at the forum, a platform he often uses to deliver policy announcements.

Device Linked To Alleged Political Assassin Travelled To High-Risk Countries, Red Flags On NGO Ties

The Oversight Project has uncovered that Vance Luther Boelter — a former appointee of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and now suspected political assassin — may have traveled extensively to several high-risk countries.

"Tracking Connections to MN Assassin We geofenced Boelter's family farm and found a unique device. We followed that device for the last 3 years - located in places like Africa, Nepal, and Washington, DC. We are releasing our data to the public in the interest of transparency," Oversight Project wrote in an X post.

Boelter has been linked to three shadowy organizations (more here): Minnesota Africans United, Revoformation Ministries, and You Gave Them Something to Eat. Each of these entities raises red flags and invites the question: were these legitimate operations, or merely front groups masking more nefarious activity?

Oversight Project continued, "First, we located the device AD-ID had traveled in the vicinity of Boelter's farm. This is the same area where there was a police helicopter tracing his family residence near Green Isle, MN before his arrest. We also followed all travel in and around Minneapolis region."

"What's more interesting is the amount of international travel linked to this device ... like visists to Africa, Nepal, Turkey, India, and Dubai," Oversight Project noted.

Device Tracking: World

They added, "Also visited some major U.S. cities such as Washington, D.C, and other places like the Chicago Yacht Club."

Device Tracking: US

Device Tracking: Chicago Yacht Club

Seamus Bruner, a key investigator at the Government Accountability Institute and collaborator with Peter Schweizer, commented on the findings, stating:

This is CRAZY! Why is Minneapolis shooter Vance Boelter (or someone close to him) doing so much travel abroad and to DC? This device activity seems to comport with Boelter's suspicious international NGO connections. And why was there talk of a manifesto but now that is apparently being covered up? So many questions need to be answered before this politically-motivated murder tears the country apart with speculative finger pointing. Great work by Oversight Project .

The plot thickens for sure.
