A shocking statistic emerged at a press briefing on Tuesday regarding the prestigious Mayo Clinic. Officials at the clinic revealed more than 900 employees were infected with COVID-19 in two weeks at the top research hospital based in Rochester, Minnesota.
According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, all 32 beds in dedicated COVID-19 intensive care units are full and the hospital will have to add more beds to care for the seriously ill patients. Dr. Amy Williams, a board member at the Mayo Clinic and chair of the Department of Medicine, said that 93% of the infected staff did not contract the virus at work. She added that most of those who did get sick at work, contracted the virus while eating maskless on their breaks.
''It shows how easy it is to get COVID-19 in the Midwest,'' Williams said. ''Our staff are being infected mostly due to community spread, and this impacts our ability to care for patients.''
