Walgreens Boots Alliance is facing backlash in the UK after running a woke Christmas TV ad, Newsweek reports. The stock (WBA) fell 3.75% Friday to $8.48 and is down 66% over the past year.
The television ad that debuted last week features actor Adjoa Andoh as Mrs. Claus referring to a gift recipient with the gender-inclusive pronouns they/them.
Online critics accused Walgreens of promoting woke values and called for the public to boycott the brand this Christmas holiday.
Andoh was criticized last year for calling King Charles III’s coronation “terribly white” during British channel ITV’s coverage of the coronation.
Newsweek contacted Walgreens Boots Alliance for comment.
Conservative TV commentator Darren Grimes of GB News posted on X: “Look at the share price of Boots since their Christmas ad came out with the ‘terribly white’ race baiting actress. People power.” As of Sunday morning, Grimes’ post had gotten 631,000 views.
@InevitableWest, who calls themselves “Defender of Western values and culture,” also called attention to the decline in the WBA stock and the ad.
Walgreens’ backlash follows the high-profile boycott against Bud Light parent Anheuser-Busch in 2023 after its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Conservatives have joined similar boycotts against woke ads and policies by Dunkin’ Donuts, Harley Davidson and Tractor Supply.
