The EEOC has issued a new fact sheet on wearable technology in the workplace’s legal risks, as tools tracking biometrics like heart rate and brain activity risk implicating federal anti-bias laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The document released by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Thursday addresses an increasingly wide array of devices that employers are having employees use in the workplace that collect information on their physical and mental conditions.
These range from smart watches or rings that monitor a worker’s vitals, proximity sensors that warn wearers of nearby hazards, and smart glasses and helmets.
