New Jersey American Water is advising customers in dozens of towns in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Union counties that their water might be discolored and not taste normal until Thursday night.
“If your water is discolored, run the cold water taps only, at the lowest level of the house for about 3 to 5 minutes until the water runs clear,” New Jersey American Water said in a statement notifying customers it is aware of the changes in the taste and color of their water.
“We immediately began to investigate, taking samples from the source water, at different points in the treatment system of the two water treatment plants that serve this region, and at sites throughout the distribution system,” New Jersey American Water said in a statement. “While preliminary sampling results show water meets primary standards, we are continuing to sample throughout our system to monitor water quality.”
Customers were notified of the issue around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Another update is expected by 9:45 p.m. Thursday, the company said in a notice.
