US economy is 'brittle underneath' despite reasonable metrics, US Treasury's Bessent says

On Tuesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent voiced concerns about the hidden fragility of the U.S. economy. Despite seemingly stable economic indicators, Bessent pointed to factors like interest rate volatility, persistent inflation, and a job market heavily focused on the government sector as signs of underlying instability.

In his comprehensive speech at the Australian embassy, Bessent criticized what he sees as the excessive government spending and overregulation during President Joe Biden's administration. He assured that President Donald Trump's administration will take a markedly different approach.

Bessent expressed his belief that the Biden administration's heavy reliance on government spending and stringent regulation resulted in an economy that, while showing satisfactory metrics, was inherently weak. He said, "The previous administration's over-reliance on excessive government spending and overbearing regulation left us with an economy that may have exhibited some reasonable metrics but ultimately was brittle underneath."

The Treasury Secretary's comments underscore the Trump administration's intent to shift economic policy away from the strategies of the previous administration.
