A new planned Muslim community, known as EPIC City, is set to be developed in Josephine -- about 40 miles northeast of Dallas.
The project, led by the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC), will span over 400 acres and include a central mosque, housing, Islamic schools, clinics, stores, parks, and a nursing home.
The development aims to create a self-sustaining community that caters to the needs of local Muslims.
However, the project has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that it could function as an exclusionary enclave.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) weighed in on the matter, stating that "Sharia cities" have no place in Texas. He emphasized that Sharia law and cities are not allowed in the state, reinforcing existing legislation that prohibits the application of foreign legal codes in Texas courts.
Abbott's comments have fueled the debate, with supporters of the project arguing that it is simply a housing community designed to meet the needs of its residents.
Meanwhile, opponents continue to express concerns about the potential implications for American legal and cultural norms. The development of EPIC City is expected to proceed, but it remains to be seen how the controversy will impact its progress.
