Detroit-based Henry Ford Health is partnering with Becton, Dickinson and Co., a medical technology firm, to roll out a pharmacy automation system aimed at streamlining how patients receive prescriptions.
The health system will allow patients to pick up select prescriptions 24/7 through an automated retrieval system similar to a high-capacity vending machine for medications, according to a Sept. 22 news release from Becton, Dickinson.
The first phase of the partnership will deploy BD’s Rowa Vmax robot across hospital-based community pharmacies in southeast and central Michigan. The move is intended to help reduce pharmacy staff workloads and improve access to medications for patients, the release said.
The partnership also plans to expand the use of the robotic systems beyond prescription use, potentially incorporating refrigerated medications, over-the-counter medications and other pharmacy tasks.
