Italy recalls envoy to Switzerland amid club fire scandal

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani recalled on Saturday the country's ambassador to Switzerland, Lorenzo Cornado, after a court decision to release Jacques Moretti, the owner of a club where a fire occurred on New Year's Eve, killing 40, from custody.

In a statement, the Italian government protested the court's move to release Moretti "despite the extreme gravity of the crime of which he is suspected, the heavy responsibilities he bears, the persistent risk of his escape, and the clear risk of further tampering with the evidence against him." Furthermore, Rome called for justice, truth, and respect for investigation and judicial processes.

The fire that broke out at Moretti's club Le Constellation in the ski resort of Cran-Montana on New Year's Eve killed 40 people, including six Italians. The Coercive Measures Tribunal in Sion released Moretti after bail for him was paid.
