United States National Economic Council (NEC) Director Kevin Hassett dismissed on Thursday the notion that the Middle East crisis could require interest rate hikes, insisting that its impact will be limited. He repeated that interest rates should be lower and that US President Donald Trump's nominee for Federal Reserve chair, Kevin Warsh, "probably" shares that belief. He also said Warsh's confirmation hearing, set for April 16, is "absolutely on track."
Hassett told Fox News that Trump has the power to impose a 50% tariff on countries selling weapons to Iran. He insisted that gasoline prices in the US will go "back to normal relatively quickly" after the Strait of Hormuz is open and reiterated that he expects 4% to 5% economic growth this year.
