Excessive screen time may be taking more from children than their attention.
For the first time, researchers in Turkey have shown that blue light exposure can speed up the onset of puberty in male rats, demonstrating a potential link between smart device screens and early childhood development.
A joint team from Gazi University and Bilkent City Hospital in Ankara presented their work at the 61st Annual European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology Meeting in The Hague, as well as published recently in Frontiers in Endocrinology.
The new findings follow their previous study on blue light exposure in female rats, where early puberty was also observed.
“For the first time, we found a direct relationship between blue light exposure and early puberty in male rats,” said lead researcher Dr. Aylin Kılınç Uğurlu, of Bikent City Hospital. “Our findings align with our previous work on female rats, which also showed similar effects, thereby providing a more comprehensive view of how blue light may influence puberty both male and female rats.”
Eighteen male rats, aged 21 days old, were divided evenly into three groups — two of which were assigned either six or 12 hours of blue light exposure, while a third, the control group, maintained a 12-hour light-dark cycle with no blue light exposure from devices.
The same team from Turkey previously conducted a study with similar results on female rats, demonstrating a potential link between early puberty and excessive screen time in both young boys and girls.Getty Images Researchers saw the first signs of puberty “significantly earlier” in male rats exposed to blue light, compared to the control group.
“I want to emphasize that this is a rat study and direct results cannot be interpreted for humans. However, we provide an experimental foundation to further investigate the health consequences of ever-increasing screen time in modern society,” Uğurlu noted in a news release.
The researchers hope to continue the current study on blue light exposure in rats to better “understand its long-term effects on reproductive organ damage and fertility,” Uğurlu said. “Ultimately, this research could lead to preventative measures and contribute to the ongoing discourse on how modern lifestyles affect physiological development and long-term health.”
In a world that revolves around access to smart devices, experts have become increasingly concerned about the effects of this now ubiquitous technology — especially the impact on youth.
Blue light is already well-known todisrupt the circadian rhythmby suppressing the production of the sleep hormone melatonin, thus delaying sleep onset and encouraging groggier days. For teenagers in particular a lack of sleep can manifest as academic struggles andmore emotional troubles. The results suggest that young people need more routine and intervention strategies surrounding the use of smart devices.
President Biden, 80, slipped and nearly tumbled down a 14-step staircase while exiting Air Force One on Tuesday — just hours after it was revealed that the commander in chief is working with a physical therapist and using shorter stairs to avoid further trip-ups.
The near-miss occurred moments after Biden touched down at the Detroit Metro Airport, where he was greeted by United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, Michigan Lt. Gov. Garland Gilchrist and US Reps. Debbie Dingell, Rashida Tlaib and Shri Thanedar, all Michigan Democrats, the clip shared by radio reporter Alex McLennon shows.
Despite the hair-raising moment, Biden recovered his footing and appeared unbothered by the gaffe.
Footage of the incident, however, quickly caught fire on social media — which was already smoldering from earlier reports that Biden has been doing balancing exercises in order to avoid more public spills as his team frets over polls showing that three-quarters of Americans think he is too old for a second term.
In addition to meeting with physical therapist Drew Contreras, the veteran politician has been spotted opting for sneakers rather than slippery dress shoes, and is using the shorter staircase to help him reach Air Force One’s flight deck.

Some onlookers, however, jumped to Biden’s defense.
“Have you ever slightly stumbled walking down stairs in your life?” liberal influencer Brian Krassenstein scoffed.
“Does that mean you are bad at your job or should be fired?” he continued, before adding that “FDR was literally in a wheelchair throughout his presidency.
“I don’t understand the fixation of the GOP with Biden tripping. He’s an old man, he’s going to do that once in a while,” another observer shrugged.
Biden’s balance issues are likely related to arthritis in his spine and foot, the Axios report said Tuesday.
His condition has been under scrutiny in recent months following several troubling incidents — including when he stumbled and fell at the Air Force Academy in June.
Air Force One is a frequent site of Biden’s slips: He was foiled by the stairs up to the aircraft three times in March 2021 alone.
“[The reports are] an unfortunate pattern of media attempting to sensationalize something that has long been public,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said of the public’s ongoing interest in keeping Biden on his toes — literally.
“This isn’t new,” he insisted, “it was proactively and transparently disclosed.”
Despite his apparent confidence, the president seemed muddled at the strike meeting as well.
“I marched a lot of UAW picket lines when I was a senator since 1973. But I tell you what — first time I’ve ever done it in person,” he told the crowd in a video shared by Benny Johnson.

GOP Senator Ted Cruz has speculated that Joe Biden will not be chosen as the Democratic nominee for 2024 and that the distinction will go to none other than Michelle Obama in a last minute Democratic National Convention decision.
“I think the odds are very significant that next summer at the Democrat national convention that the Democrat party will jettison Joe Biden and will throw him off the ticket, and they will parachute in instead, Michelle Obama to be their candidate,” Cruz told Sean Hannity.
“I think they’re gonna look to Michelle Obama as the savior to come in,” Cruz continued, adding “I think if that happens, that would be very, very dangerous.”
“And every time I see a Democrat or one of their puppets in the press beginning to point out the problems with Joe Biden – every time that happens, the chances of that go up and up and up,” Cruz added.
When Hannity asked if Michelle Obama even wants to run, Cruz reasoned that there are no other candidates that wouldn’t alienate certain Democratic voters.
Referring to Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Gavin Newsom, and Pete Buttigieg, Cruz noted that “If the Democrats pick any of those four, you tick off the other three and risk alienating their supporters.”
He continued, “I think Michelle Obama brings the Obama pedigree. She parachutes in with also the suit of armor of a First Lady with high positives and relatively low negatives. And I think they can justify to everyone who gets snubbed, ‘Well, look, we went with Michelle Obama instead.’”
“I don’t know if she wants it. But I do think it would be much more attractive to her to come in next summer and just campaign a couple of months to the general rather than having to spend two years campaigning vigorously on the ground,” the Senator further suggested.
