‘Many’ Israeli hostages already likely killed by Israel strikes, Hamas claims: ‘Rest in tunnel’

Many of the Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas have likely been killed in recent Israel retaliatory strikes on Gaza, a spokesman for the terror group says — claiming the terrorists have lost track of those abducted.

“The fate of many of the enemy’s hostages and detainees has become unknown in recent weeks, and the rest are all in the tunnel of the unknown due to the Zionist aggression,” Abu Obeida, a Palestinian militant who serves as the group’s mouthpiece, said in a televised statement.

“Most likely, many of them were killed recently, the rest are in great danger every hour, and the enemy’s leadership and army bear full responsibility,” he continued, according to Times of Israel.

Obeida also claimed that Hamas was told by “several parties in the resistance fronts that they will expand their strikes on the Israeli enemy in the coming days.”

The statement came as Israel and Hamas marked the 100th day of their savage conflict, which has killed nearly 24,000 Palestinians, including hundreds of terrorists, razed wide swaths of the embattled Gaza Strip and pushed most of the enclave’s 2.3 million residents from their homes.

Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre in Israel — in which terrorists butchered nearly 1,200 people, including many civilians, and kidnapped about 240 others — sparked a brutal war between its fighters and Israel.

Hamas is believed to still have about 132 victims in captivity.

Israel has vowed to get them back, especially as the country’s leaders face mounting protests from their families — including a 24-hour rally in Tel Aviv that began Saturday evening and drew tens of thousands of supporters.

Israeli forces have only managed to rescue one hostage so far.

But more than 100 were released during a weeklong cease-fire in November in exchange for 240 Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Hamas says it won’t release more until the Israel Defense Force ends its offensive.

Guatemalans Angered as President-Elect's Inauguration Delayed by Wrangling in Congress

Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo waited to be sworn into office Sunday as the old-guard Congress dawdled and delayed the inauguration, sparking angry protests by demonstrators tired of months-long attempts to keep him from taking office.

Supporters who had been waiting hours for a festive inauguration celebration in Guatemala’s City’s emblematic Plaza de la Constitución were fed up with yet another delay, and marched to the building where congress was meeting.

They scuffled with lines of riot police, sweeping them roughly out of their way before gathering outside congress demanding legislators stop delaying and name the delegation that must attend the ceremony.

The inauguration was thus tinged by legal wrangling and tensions, just like almost every day since Arévalo's resounding Aug. 20 election victory.

Congress, which was supposed to attend the inauguration as a special session of the legislature, engaged in bitter infighting over who to recognize as part of the congressional delegation, as Congress members yelled at each other.

The leadership commission tasked with doing that was packed with old-guard opponents of Arévalo, and the delay was seen as a tactic to draw out the inauguration and weaken Arévalo.

“The commission is taking too long to review (legislators') credentials, and they are demanding requirements that aren't even in the law,” said Román Castellanos, a congressman from Arévalo's Seed Movement.

The still-serving attorney general, Consuelo Porras, had tried every legal trick in the book to put iArévalo on trial or in jail before he could take office. And Arévalo’s party won't have a majority in Congress and may not even have formal recognition there.

Arévalo is an academic, diplomat and the son of a progressive president from the middle of the 20th century, and his election marked a political awakening in a population weary of corruption and impunity.

“I feel enthusiastic, because we are finally reaching the end of this long and torturous process," Arévalo said before his inauguration. “Guatemalan society has developed the determination to say ‘no’ to these political-criminal elites.”

But as much as Arévalo wants to change things, he faces enormous obstacles. His anti-corruption stance and outsider status are threats to deep-rooted interests in the Central American country, observers say.

Still, the fact he got this far is a testament to international support and condemnation of the myriad attempts to disqualify him.

For many Guatemalans, Sunday’s inauguration represented not only the culmination of Arévalo’s victory at the polls, but also their successful defense of the country’s democracy.

The inauguration was scheduled to have a festive tone: cumbia and salsa music is planned for a huge celebration in Guatemala’s City’s emblematic Plaza de la Constitución.

That Arévalo made it to within a day of his inauguration was largely owed to thousands of Guatemala’s Indigenous people, who took to the streets last year to protest and demand that Porras and her prosecutors respect the Aug. 20 vote. Many had called for her resignation, but her term doesn’t end until 2026 and it's not clear whether Arévalo can rid himself of her.

Prosecutors sought to suspend Arévalo’s Seed Movement party — a move that could prevent its legislators from holding leadership positions in Congress — and strip Arévalo of his immunity three times.

On Friday, his choice for vice president, Karin Herrera, announced that the Constitutional Court had granted her an injunction heading off a supposed arrest order.

Prosecutors have alleged that the Seed Movement engaged in misdeeds in collecting signatures to register as a party years earlier, that its leaders encouraged a monthlong occupation of a public university, and that there was fraud in the election. International observers have denied that.

One key was that Arévalo got early and strong support from the international community. The European Union, Organization of American States and the U.S. government repeatedly demanded respect for the popular vote.

Washington has gone further, sanctioning Guatemalan officials and private citizens suspected of undermining the country’s democracy.

On Thursday, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, Brian A. Nichols, said the aggression toward Arévalo won't likely stop with his inauguration.

Under Porras, the country’s prosecutors and judges who led that effort have become targets, forcing dozens to flee the country or be arrested.

Dear Tax Guy: Help student-athletes navigate income tax, especially with endorsement deals

'There has been a lot of attention on the implications of NIL deals ever since the National Collegiate Athletic Association said student-athletes could be compensated for the use of their name, image and likeness'

Dear Tax Guy,

Do you have information on helping student-athletes like me with filing taxes this year? Especially for those receiving money from their name image and likeness.

Stretching Out For Tax Season

Dear Stretching Out,

Young athletes know the acronyms tied to their sport: NCAA, NBA, NHL, NFL, MLS and MLB.

Put the IRS on that list.

It's been less than three years since the National Collegiate Athletic Association said student-athletes could be compensated for the use of their name, image and likeness. That could mean marketing deals, product endorsements, promotional appearances, and much more. The NCAA made the change following a landmark Supreme Court decision in 2021.

There has been a lot of attention on the implications of NIL deals ever since. Some speculate it's one reason why University of Alabama coach Nick Saban recently shocked the college football world by retiring with six years and $71.8 million still to go on his contract.

What's received less attention are the taxes inhabiting this brave new world of college sports.

"One of the biggest areas that I don't think is talked about is taxation," said Robert Raiola, a director at the Sports and Entertainment Group within PKF O'Connor Davies Advisory.

He's helped college athletes with NIL deals. Until he explains, it's common they don't know taxes will apply, Raiola said.

The IRS' ombudsman, the Taxpayer Advocate Service, set up an online resource last year to help athletes and their families understand the tax obligation with NIL deals.

Rule number one from the IRS resource: "Any income from NIL activities, including non-cash, is considered taxable income."

It's game time - starting Jan. 29. That's when the IRS starts accepting and processing 2023 income tax returns. Here are some highlights:

A number to watch: 1099

In the eyes of the taxman, student-athletes getting money in NIL deals are independent contractors and not employees, said Raiola, co-author of the book "Winning Tax Strategies for Athletes & Entertainers."

The compensation to independent contractors is documented in 1099 forms, he said. Paid by a memorabilia collector for your autograph? Expect a 1099-NEC. Paid to endorse clothing, make a promotional appearance or something else? Expect a 1099-NEC.

The NEC stands for Nonemployee Compensation. The payment threshold that prompts this tax form is payment worth at least $600, Raiola noted.

The tax-time schooling of college athletes will be "greatly enhanced when they get a nice 1099-NEC in their mail. That's where the education process is going to start," said Ryan Losi, executive vice president of the accounting firm Piascik. His job includes tax work for league-based and non league-based professional athletes.

Suppose you've been paid via Venmo or PayPal. (PYPL) That's when you can expect a 1099-K. For this year, the IRS is planning for a $5,000 threshold to trigger the form.

These 1099s flag to you how much you've been compensated. The forms also go to the IRS, so they also know you're profiting off your talents and they'll expect their cut too.

Specifically, they want your money for income taxes and self-employment taxes. When wage workers get a paycheck, payroll taxes are skimmed off the top and go towards Medicare and Social Security.

A student athlete is the same as others receiving independent contractor money. They are expected to pay the employee and the employer side of those payroll taxes, which come to 15.3%. At tax time, the IRS says people can deduct the employer-equivalent that they've paid.

Until then, the IRS is expecting quarterly estimated tax payments.

For this year, first quarter payments are due April 15, and second quarter payments are due on June 17. Third quarter payments are due on Sept. 16 and fourth quarter payments are due Jan. 15, 2025.

Two other notes: Don't forget the likelihood of state income taxes from the pay on NIL deals. Also, compensation doesn't have to mean cash in your bank account.

The payout in certain NIL deals might be a vehicle, a trip, equipment, cryptocurrency and more, Losi said. "It's non-cash compensation, but it's taxable. The question is, do you know the fair value?"

Business expenses

NIL deals enable athletes to turn their talents into a business. That being the case, they have business expenses eligible for write offs, experts say.

Paying a trainer, renting gym space and certain travel costs could be eligible. So could the cost of professional advice from lawyers, tax experts and others.

Of course, hang onto the receipts for all of this.

Business expenses tied with the NIL deal can reduce tax burdens. Raiola and Losi said student-athletes becoming flush with money can trim their tax bills by setting up solo 401(K) plans or Simplified Employee Pension plans known as SEPs.

It's never too early to save for retirement, after all.

While we're talking school, money and taxes, a note on scholarships.

Scholarship money is tax exempt, but the IRS has rules. The person has to be seeking a degree at an "educational institution that maintains a regular faculty and curriculum, and normally has a regularly enrolled body of students in attendance at the place where it carries on its educational activities."

The money has to be used "to pay for tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance at the educational institution, or for fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at the educational institution," the IRS said.

Any amount that goes towards "incidental expenses, such as room and board, travel" must be included in gross income, the IRS added.

Next move?

Strip away the sports talk - and there's nothing new about the tax obligations at play here, Losi and Raiola said.

If nothing else, pay the quarterly taxes, hold onto receipts and all tax forms. File a return by April 15 or get an extension to file one by Oct. 15. No one wants failure to pay or failure to file penalties from the IRS.

In my teens and 20s, I certainly wasn't thinking about business write-off intricacies and self-employment taxes. And, trust me, I had no lucrative athletic deals in the works!

That's why it might be a good call to find a trusted tax professional to help. "You gotta have somebody who knows what they are doing in this space," Raiola said.

The IRS is a referee you definitely don't want to annoy.

NBC News Admits 'Deep State' Exists... To Save Us From Trump's Return

The last time Donald Trump got within striking distance of the Oval Office in 2016, the Clinton campaign, the Obama administration, and various foreign accomplices invented a hoax accusing the real estate tycoon of being a secret Russian agent, who would use the power of the United States to do Vladimir Putin's bidding (Which begs the question; why wouldn't Putin have just invaded Ukraine when his 'puppet' Trump wouldn't have waged a proxy war?).

And when Donald Trump asked Ukraine about obvious corruption by the Biden family, one of the key 'deep state' players in his impeachment behind the scenes was none other than Mary McCord - who went from taking down Michael Flynn after the FBI set him up, to helping Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) to peddle a "whistleblower" complaint about Trump's Ukraine call.

McCord is back with a new hoax to peddle, telling NBC News that the Deep State is preparing for Trump's return - and is taking action to limit his ability to 'become a dictator' and use the military to those ends.

"We’re already starting to put together a team to think through the most damaging types of things that he [Trump] might do so that we’re ready to bring lawsuits if we have to," McCord - executive director of the Institution for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown Law - told the outlet.

The quotes from this fine piece of yellow journalism from NBC are simply hilarious...

  • "Donald Trump is sparking fears among those who understand the inner workings of the Pentagon that he would convert the nonpartisan U.S. military into the muscular arm of his political agenda as he makes comments about dictatorship and devalues the checks and balances that underpin the nation’s two-century-old democracy."

  • "A circle of appointees independent of Trump’s political operation steered him away from ideas that would have pushed the limits of presidential power in his last term."

  • "In a new term, many former officials worry that Trump would instead surround himself with loyalists unwilling to say no."

  • "He’s a clear and present danger to our democracy."

  • "His support is solid. And I don’t think people understand what living in a dictatorship would mean."

  • "There are an array of horrors that could result from Donald Trump’s unrestricted use of the Insurrection Act."

  • "The military is hundreds of thousands of people strong, and ultimately Trump will find people to follow his legal orders no matter what ... The Insurrection Act is a legal order, and if he orders it there will be military officers, especially younger men and women, who will follow that legal order."

This one might be the best: "We’re about 30 seconds away from the Armageddon clock when it comes to democracy," said William Cohen, a former Republican senator from Maine and defense secretary in the Clinton administration. "I think that’s how close we’re coming to it when you have a presidential candidate who can be indicted on 91 counts, who can be [found liable for] sexual aggression, who we have seen lies pathologically, who has flouted every rule in the book."

Wow!

Narrative: Trump is going to appoint loyal peons to subvert democracy and declare himself a dictator.

But wait, the deep state cavalry is here!

"Now, bracing for Trump’s potential return, a loose-knit network of public interest groups and lawmakers is quietly devising plans to try to foil any efforts to expand presidential power, which could include pressuring the military to cater to his political needs."

Part of the aim is to identify like-minded organizations and create a coalition to challenge Trump from day one, those taking part in the discussions said. Some participants are combing through policy papers being crafted for a future conservative administration. They’re also watching the interviews that Trump allies are giving to the press for clues to how a Trump sequel would look.

Other participants include Democracy Forward, an organization that took the Trump administration to court more than 100 times during his administration, and Protect Democracy, an anti-authoritarian group.

...

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., is crafting a bill that would clarify the act and give Congress and the courts some say in its use. Its chances of passage are slim given that Republicans control the House and are largely loyal to Trump.

You tell us what that sounds like...

deep state
noun

  • a body of people, typically influential members of government agencies or the military, believed to be involved in the secret manipulation or control of government policy.

"We are preparing for litigation and preparing to use every tool in the toolbox that our democracy provides to provide the American people an ability to fight back," according to Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward. "We believe this is an existential moment for American democracy and it’s incumbent on everybody to do their part."

Ah yes, another 'existential moment.'

Remember, the first rule of 'Deep State' is you do not talk about 'Deep State'.

Zelenskiy to Meet Dimon in Davos as Ukraine Seeks Aid Rebuilding

  • JPMorgan has been advising Ukraine on financing reconstruction
  • War assistance stalled as allies grow weary of the conflict

Volodymyr Zelenskiy plans to meet with JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s Jamie Dimon this week at the World Economic Forum as the Ukrainian president seeks to replenish the country’s coffers for its fight against Russia, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

More than $100 billion in vital aid for Kyiv is stalled in Washington and Brussels as allies grow weary of the expensive war effort with Ukraine’s months-long counteroffensive failing to deliver a battlefield breakthrough. With fighting about to enter its third year, Ukraine’s calls for assistance are being eclipsed on the world stage by the Israel-Hamas conflict that began in October.

China's military and government acquire Nvidia chips despite US ban

Chinese military bodies, state-run artificial intelligence research institutes and universities have over the past year purchased small batches of Nvidia semiconductors banned by the U.S. from export to China, a Reuters review of tender documents show.

The sales by largely unknown Chinese suppliers highlight the difficulties Washington faces, despite its bans, in completely cutting off China's access to advanced U.S. chips that could fuel breakthroughs in AI and sophisticated computers for its military.

Buying or selling high-end U.S. chips is not illegal in China and the publicly available tender documents show dozens of Chinese entities have bought and taken receipt of Nvidia semiconductors since restrictions were imposed.

These include its A100 and the more powerful H100 chip - whose exports to China and Hong Kong were banned in September 2022 - as well as the slower A800 and H800 chips Nvidia then developed for the Chinese market but which were also banned last October.

The graphic processing units - a type of chip - that are built by Nvidia are widely seen as far superior to rival products for AI work as they can more efficiently process huge amounts of data needed for machine-learning tasks.

The continued demand for and access to banned Nvidia chips also underlines the lack of good alternatives for Chinese firms despite the nascent development of rival products from Huawei and others. Prior to the bans, Nvidia commanded a 90% share of China's AI chip market.

Purchasers included elite universities as well as two entities subject to U.S. export restrictions - the Harbin Institute of Technology and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, which have been accused of involvement in military matters or being affiliated to a military body contrary to U.S. national interest.

The former purchased six Nvidia A100 chips in May to train a deep-learning model. The latter purchased one A100 in December 2022. Its purpose was not identified.
