Springfield, Ohio, man reported Haitian migrants snatching geese out of park just 2 weeks ago

A Springfield, Ohio, resident on his way to work called 911 to report spotting four Haitian migrants snatching geese near a city park just two weeks ago, according to a newly revealed recording.

The call to a Clark County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher, obtained by the Federalist, appears to support a viral claim about some members of the migrant community eating animals in city parks.

Former President Donald Trump blasted the story into the mainstream Tuesday night when he claimed migrants in Springfield were “eating the dogs.”

Local cops and officials denied that anyone has reported pets being taken for food — but residents have previously claimed that ducks and other fowl were being eaten.

“I’m sitting here, I’m riding on the trail, I’m going to my orientation for my job today, and I see a group of Haitian people, there was about four of them, they all had geese in their hand,” the caller told a dispatcher.

He said the group — two men and two women — were each clutching one of the birds when they took off in a gray Toyota Tacoma truck. The caller gave a portion of their license plate he was able to make out.

The Aug. 26 call originated from Springfield, a city of 60,000 about 45 minutes from Columbus — that has become synonymous with fears of culture clashes arising when a large number of migrants move into a small town all at once.

About 20,000 Haitian immigrants have flocked to the sleepy burg in the last four years, which has put significant strain on local resources, prompting city leaders to pen letters to US Sens. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) this summer desperately seeking federal aid to ease their economic burdens.

On Tuesday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced he was sending Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers to help local cops, and was also earmarking $2.5 million to fund the city’s overburdened health system.

The claims about migrants treating the population of local fauna — including household pets — like a smorgasbord have gone massively viral in recent days

The credibility level for such reports has varied — and some have been outright hoaxes — but the attention-grabbing viral claims have been boosted by the likes of Elon Musk and Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, which propelled them into the mainstream.

Critics have said the claims are racist against the black Haitian migrants.

Residents attending a Springfield City Commission meeting last month shared a variety of horror stories involving migrants doing everything from harassing locals to throwing mattresses on front lawns to consuming anything on four legs.

Anthony Harris, 28, had a range of complaints about poor migrant behavior.

“These Haitians are running into trash cans. They’re running into buildings. They’re flipping cars in the middle of the street, and I don’t know how like y’all can be comfortable with this,” he vented to city officials at the Aug. 28 meeting.

He also claimed — without evidence — that Haitian migrants were beheading ducks at local parks and taking them home to eat.

“They’re in the park, grabbing up ducks by the neck and cutting their heads off and eating them.”

Another image that went viral was originally shared on the Columbus subreddit in July shows a man walking down a suburban street holding a goose, though the post’s author provided no additional context.

Bicara Therapeutics increases shares offered 25% ahead of $250 million IPO

Bicara Therapeutics, a Phase 1 biotech developing a bifunctional antibody to target solid tumors, raised the proposed deal size for its upcoming IPO on Wednesday.

The Boston, MA-based company now plans to raise $250 million by offering 14.7 million shares at a price range of $16 to $18. The company had previously filed to offer 11.8 million shares at the same range. At the revised deal size, Bicara Therapeutics will raise 25% more in proceeds than previously anticipated and command a fully diluted market value of $914.6 million.

Bicara Therapeutics' lead candidate, ficerafusp alfa, is a bifunctional antibody that combines two clinically validated targets, an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-directed monoclonal antibody with a domain that binds to human transforming growth factor beta (TGF-b). Through this dual-targeting mechanism, the company believes ficerafusp alfa has the potential to exert potent anti-tumor activity by simultaneously blocking both cancer cell-intrinsic EGFR survival and proliferation, as well as the immunosuppressive TGF-b signaling within the tumor microenvironment. Ficerafusp alfa is initially being developed in recurrent/metastatic (R/M) head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The company is conducting an ongoing Phase 1/1b trial in the US in combination with pembrolizumab. It plans to initiate a pivotal Phase 2/3 trial late in the 4Q24 or early in the 1Q25.

Bicara Therapeutics was founded in 2019 and plans to list on the Nasdaq under the symbol BCAX. Morgan Stanley, TD Cowen, Cantor Fitzgerald, and Stifel are the joint bookrunners on the deal.

'Data centres as vital as NHS and power grid, UK government says'

Data centres in the UK are to be classified as critical national infrastructure, joining the emergency services, finance and healthcare systems, and energy and water supplies.

It means they would get extra government support during a major incident, such as a cyber attack, an IT outage or extreme weather, in order to minimise disruption.

Data centres are huge warehouses full of vast banks of computers that remotely power services such as artificial intelligence (AI) applications, data processing and streaming.

Their development has faced criticism over their energy and water use.

But the new Labour government says it backs the sector - with technology secretary Peter Kyle describing data centres as “the engines of modern life”.

There are currently 13 sectors listed as critical national infrastructure in the UK. The list was last updated nine years ago, when space and defence were added.

The previous government launched a consultation in December 2023 to discuss the potential addition of data centres.

A team of officials will now be set up to specifically monitor potential threats against data centres and coordinate a response in the event of a serious incident, such as the recent worldwide chaos sparked by an update from the cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, which affected millions of people and businesses.

However there will not be any new regulations, nor is additional scrutiny of data centre operators’ existing contingency arrangements planned.

“It’s not surprising that data centres are now to be classed as critical infrastructure as they house so many critical online services,” said Prof Alan Woodward, a cyber security expert from Surrey University.

“Many people think of services as being in an ethereal cloud, but everything is based at some point on physical infrastructure and more often than not this is based in a data centre.”

In 2023 the former deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden warned of Russian “attempts to attack British infrastructure".

Lindy Cameron, the boss of the National Cyber Security Centre, said more needed to be done to protect it from cyber threats.

“Bringing data centres into the Critical National Infrastructure regime will allow better coordination and cooperation with the Government against cyber criminals and unexpected events,” he said.

The need for data centres is growing, in part because of the proliferation of AI-based services, which require considerable computing power.

On Wednesday, Amazon Web Services announced it will invest £8bn building and operating data centres in Britain over the next five years.

Microsoft and Google are separately building their first UK such premises at the moment.

But environmental concerns about data centres and their demand on resources remain - they are energy-hungry and can require large quantities of water for cooling.

The chief executive of the National Grid said in March that data centre power use in the UK would increase six-fold in the next decade.

Plans to build the data centres also often run into local opposition - in June, councillors in Buckinghamshire rejected a proposed development because of its impact on the green belt.

Petco stock surges 33% after Roaring Kitty post

CEO touts focus on profitability after second-quarter earnings

Shares of Petco Health & Wellness shares (WOOF) rose after it reported second-quarter results and executives on the earnings call discussed a focus on improving cash flow.

The stock jumped 32.9% to $4.08 on Wednesday but is down about 14% for the past 52 weeks.

It may have gotten a boost after influential meme-stock trader Roaring Kitty, aka Keith Gill, reposted a Reddit post that read "Woof is going bananas. Who's here with me?"

Revenue declined 0.5% to $1.52 billion, while the adjusted loss was 2 cents a share, compared with adjusted earnings of 6 cents a share a year earlier, Petco said Tuesday. For the third quarter, Petco expects an adjusted loss of 3 cents to 4 cents a share on revenue of $1.5 billion.

In a press release, Chief Executive Joel Anderson said "Looking ahead, I see tremendous opportunities for us to significantly improve our operating and financial performance and better leverage Petco's strengths to capture greater share, deliver sustained profitability, and create value for shareholders."

RBC Capital raised its price target to $3.50 from $3, while Wells Fargo increased its target to $3 from $2.75. Wedbush maintained its $5 target and Baird kept its $3 target.

In First, US Alleges China Directly Supporting Russia's 'War Machine'

Throughout most of the Russia-Ukraine war, Washington's constant complaint has been that China has ramped up supplies of dual use items and technologies which aid Russia's defense manufacturing sector.

It was only in August that the Bident administration rolled out its latest sanctions aimed at disrupting the China-Russia transfers, which have included semiconductor chips, machine tools, microelectronics, navigation equipment, jet parts, ball bearings, and more. Those sanctions impacted over 400 entities and individuals, with many being Chinese companies.

As expected, China had blasted the "typical unilateral sanctions" from the US, warning that this only serves to disrupt global trade orders and destabilize global supply chains. "China urges the U.S. to immediately stop its wrong practices and will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interest of Chinese companies," a foreign ministry statement said last month.

But this week Washington has gone further in its accusations, for the first time accusing China of providing direct support for Russia's "war machine".

Now, the charge has gone from indirect to direct Chinese support. The fresh allegations were first reported by the Financial Times:

US deputy secretary of state Kurt Campbell told reporters in Brussels that China was supplying Moscow with items that were directly helping the Russian military as it prosecutes its war of aggression in Ukraine. Campbell’s comments after a visit to Nato headquarters in the Belgian capital marked a new assessment by US officials of the extent of China’s direct military support for Russia.

"These are not dual-use capabilities," Campbell said on Tuesday. "These are component pieces of a very substantial effort on the part of China to help sustain, build and diversify various elements of the Russian war machine."

Yet one of FT's sources acknowledge that as yet there is no "clear evidence" of these "very concerning" charges. The Biden administration is said to be scrutinizing potential evidence, however.

As for nailing down specifics of the types of items and aid the US finds so concerning, Campbell has highlighted the exchange of technologies and know-how related to developing submarine, aeronautic, and missile technologies. This would have a "negative and concerning impact" on American security and that of its allies.

"These new areas of collaboration between Russia and China are in the areas of design and . . . application. They are significant," Campbell said. This China-Russia partnership in the area of military technology would have "very significant impact on Chinese capabilities and deployments in the western Pacific." This is in reference to the Russians apparently helping the Chinese further advance their submarine and ship capabilities.

The US deputy secretary of state further described that this collaboration has been "orchestrated at the highest levels" in Moscow and Beijing, and that this doesn't merely mark a "tactical alliance" but instead "this is a fundamental alignment."

These heightened accusations against China and Russia were accompanied by new warnings and threats from Blinken this week:

In the backdrop Russian and Chinese naval and aerial forces are planning a series of drills in Pacific waters, focused especially in the Sea of Japan, for later this month. The reality however, is that as these regional giants continue their "unlimited" friendship and partnership, Washington can do nothing but sit back and seek to 'manage' its relations with China. In many ways all of this is but more blowback from round after round of US sanctions and punitive actions aimed at both.
