Woke Georgia DA pummeled in re-election bid after refusing Laken Riley murder case

The lefty prosecutor of the Georgia county where Laken Riley was allegedly murdered by a Venezuelan migrant will be looking for another job after being soundly defeated in her re-election bid.

Democratic District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez, whose circuit includes liberal Athens-Clarke County and conservative Oconee County, was trounced 60%-40% by Republican Kalki Yalamanchili Tuesday.

The defeat was part of a tsunami of soft-on-crime progressive prosecutors and pols — many backed by left-wing kingmaker billionaire George Soros — booted from office.

In the San Francisco Bay area, Alameda County DA Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao were both recalled.

The pols faced harsh criticism over skyrocketing crime since they took office in 2023.

Los Angeles County DA George Gascón was also ousted, and San Francisco Mayor London Breed conceded her race Thursday night.

Gonzalez was elected in 2020 on the heels of Soros and other progressives pushing for criminal justice reform in response to Black Lives Matter and other nationwide protests.

She promised diversion programs, rehabilitation, and shorter sentences for nonviolent offenders.

In February, Gonzalez removed herself from the case and appointed a special prosecutor, after criticism from Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp over failing to secure a single guilty verdict the entire time she had been in office.

“We will not allow this or any case to be used for political gain,” Gonzalez said at the time.

Riley’s alleged killer, Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, was arrested in Queens six months before her death, on child endangerment charges.

But New York City’s migrant sanctuary policies prevented the NYPD from turning the Venezuelan over to the feds.

Corvus New Data on Ciforadenant in Metastatic Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer

Corvus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRVS), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, today announced new data highlighting the potential of ciforadenant, the Company’s adenosine A2A receptor antagonist, to overcome resistance to anti-PD1 immunotherapy in the treatment of metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).

The data were presented today in an oral session at the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) 39th Annual Meeting by Aram Lyu, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, University of California, San Francisco and Parker Scholar at the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. Dr. Lyu’s abstract, titled “Identification and therapeutic target of myeloid-mediated mechanisms of immunotherapy resistance in prostate cancer” was selected as a Top 100 abstract by SITC.

“These studies reveal important details on the role of the adenosine pathway on the immunobiology of mCRPC, including the importance of myeloid cells and the adenosine gene signature,” said Richard A. Miller, M.D., co-founder, president and chief executive officer of Corvus. “The mechanism is consistent with and builds on results from our clinical trials in renal cell cancer and prostate cancer, along with the potential for the adenosine gene signature to select patients most likely to respond. This could be an important advancement for patients with tumors that are resistant to checkpoint inhibitors, and is supportive of our ongoing clinical trial of ciforadenant in combination with ipilimumab and nivolumab in front line renal cell cancer.”

'US, Mexico reach agreement on Rio Grande water deliveries amid drought, shortages'

An agreement aimed at ensuring more regular water from Mexico to the United States has been reached, both governments said on Saturday, following a long period of tension over a decades-old treaty.

A new measure of the International Boundary and Water Commission, which oversees the 1944 U.S.-Mexico water treaty, will provide Mexico with "tools and flexibility to deliver water earlier in the five-year cycle," a statement by the IBWC said.

The neighboring countries have tussled over the 1944 treaty, which was designed to allocate shared water resources. Mexico is required to send 1.75 million acre-feet of water from the Rio Grande to the United States over a five-year cycle, supplying farmers with critical irrigation.

The Latin American country, however, has not fully delivered recently amid some of the most severe drought-driven water shortages in nearly 30 years.

Mexico said in its own statement that the measure would provide greater reliability and predictability in water allocations to users in both countries, establish new working groups and improve water quality in the Rio Grande basin.

The new measure was the result of 18 months of negotiation, the IBWC said.

Mexico and the United States will establish working groups to "develop water conservation for the benefit of both countries," the IBWC said.

Putin signs into law mutual defence treaty with North Korea

(Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a treaty on the country's strategic partnership with North Korea which includes a mutual defence provision, according to a decree published on Saturday.

The accord, signed by Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June after a summit in Pyongyang, calls on each side to come to the other's aid in case of an armed attack.

Russia's upper house ratified the treaty this week, while the lower house endorsed it last month. Putin signed a decree on that ratification that appeared on Saturday on a government website outlining legislative procedures.

The treaty galvanises closer ties between Moscow and Pyongyang since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Reports from South Korea and Western countries say North Korea has supplied Russia with weaponry. Ukrainian forensic experts say they have found traces of the weapons at sites of Russian attacks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday that North Korea has sent 11,000 troops to Russia and some of them suffered casualties in combat with Kyiv's forces Russia's southern Kursk region.

Russia has not confirmed the presence of the North Korean troops.
