‘Iranian scientists were secretly developing nuclear weapon components’

Following a directive from Israel’s political echelon, the Israel Defense Forces launched what it described as a preemptive, precise and combined offensive codenamed “Operation Rising Lion” in the early hours of Friday, targeting Iran’s nuclear program and other military targets across the Islamic Republic, as well as, reportedly, senior Iranian military and Islamic Republican Guards Corps commanders.

The decision was, according to a defense official, signed off on by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, in coordination with IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, on Monday, June 9. It marked the culmination of years of warnings and intelligence gathering, which, according to military officials, revealed that the Iranian regime had reached a point of no return in its quest for nuclear bombs.

In recent months, intelligence gathered by Israel contained evidence of the Iranian regime’s efforts to produce thousands of kilograms of enriched uranium, alongside decentralized and fortified enrichment underground facilities. This would enable the Iranian regime to enrich uranium to military-grade levels and obtain a nuclear weapon within a short period of time, according to Israeli defense officials.

Additionally, in recent years, and more so since the beginning of the war, concrete progress has been identified in the Iranian regime’s efforts to produce weapons components adapted for a nuclear bomb.

The IDF stated that the Iranian regime had been advancing a secret plan for the technological advancement of all parts of the development of a nuclear weapon, in a program involving senior nuclear scientists working secretly.

“In recent months, this program has accelerated significantly, bringing the regime significantly closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon,” the military stated.

A military official, discussing the operation, elaborated on the specific intelligence that made the preemptive strike a necessity at this time.

“We have been closely following developments in Iran for years,” said the official. “Recently, we identified that the Iranian regime significantly advanced towards obtaining a nuclear weapon, and its capability to act in a concrete way against us.”

He detailed three critical components of the threat that had converged. The first, he explained, was the “nuclear trigger,” adding, “The Iranian regime is advancing towards obtaining a nuclear weapon. In recent months, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published a number of reports that detail a concerning trend of the advancement of the Iranian nuclear project that goes beyond civilian usage. Yesterday, the IAEA Board of Governors declared for the first time in 20 years that the Iranian regime is blatantly violating nuclear agreements.”

Crucially, the military official revealed for the first time that this went far beyond enrichment. “We are exposing for the first time that the Iranian regime has been advancing a secret program to assemble a nuclear weapon. In the framework of this plan, nuclear scientists and senior officials in Iran have been working to secretly develop all components needed for developing a nuclear weapon—explosive materials, the core (enriched uranium) and neutron source,” he stated.

A neutron source is a device placed at the core of a nuclear weapon, which, upon detonation, releases a burst of neutrons to initiate the rapid nuclear chain reaction required for an explosion. According to the official, the Iranian regime made a decision to advance this secret assembly, having already accumulated enough fissile material “for 15 nuclear bombs within days.”

The second component of the Iranian threat to Israel, the official noted, was “ballistic missiles.” He said, “The Iranian regime has thousands of ballistic missiles, which it plans to double, and to triple, with the understanding that this is an effective threat against Israel. We are talking about a number of missiles that, even without a nuclear weapon, represents an existential threat.”

The third component was Iran’s ongoing effort in the “distribution of weapons and arms to regional proxies,” with Israel identifying attempts by the regime to arm its proxies across the Middle East with ammunition to be used against Israel. These elements, combined with concrete intelligence obtained over the years of a plan developed by senior Iranian officials with Hezbollah and Hamas to destroy Israel, created what the official termed an immediate and imminent existential threat.

IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said in a separate English announcement on Friday,“Over the past few months, intelligence has shown that Iran is closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon. This morning the IDF began preemptive and precise strikes targeting the Iranian nuclear program in order to prevent the Iranian regime’s ability to build a nuclear bomb in the immediate time frame. We have no choice. We are operating against an imminent and existential threat. We cannot allow the Iranian regime to obtain a nuclear weapon that would be a danger to Israel and the entire world.”

The military official stressed that Israel has repeatedly warned the world about the threat.

“We have warned the world for many years,” he said, adding, “We have warned our partners across the world, publicly and privately speaking about Iran advancing, saying this is a global problem, not just an Israeli problem, if the Iranian regime has a nuclear bomb. And we understand if we don’t act now, if we don’t operate now, we’ll get to the point of no return.”

He also addressed Iran’s dual-track strategy of deception: “We understand, and our intelligence shows us that Iran is promoting this nuclear plan right now, in recent months, while the world thinks they are negotiating, at the same time they are promoting a nuclear bomb. As I said before, they have enough enriched materials for 15 nuclear bombs. They are advancing also in enrichment, but also in the weapons group. These are two places that we just cannot accept. A regime that said that their mission is to destroy us with a nuclear bomb that is secretly getting to that nuclear bomb is something we cannot accept, and we must stop it.”

Discussing Israel’s security partnerships, the official stated, “We’ve had great relationships since day one of this war with many of our partners. Leading the way was the U.S. military, saving lives. That’s not an overstatement…. As always, we have a great relations with our partners.”

The Commander of the IDF Home Front Command, Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo, urged the public to prepare for widespread alerts. “During this campaign, we anticipate widespread alerts. It is crucial that you take shelter in the best way possible, whether in your private home or in public spaces—preferably in a safe room, shelter, or protected space approved by the Home Front Command. If there are no protected spaces near you, you must enter a stairway or an interior room.”

He added, “Every civilian must be aware of the most protected space in their area. When an alert is received, you must enter the protected space and remain there until further notice. You must avoid unnecessary movement outside and refrain from driving on the road. There are challenging and complicated days ahead of us. We are strong together and prepared to defend the State of Israel.”

In its initial announcement, the IDF stated that “a short while ago, dozens of IAF [Israeli Air Force] jets completed the first stage that included strikes on dozens of military targets, including nuclear targets in different areas of Iran.”

The announcement noted, “Today, Iran is closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon. Weapons of mass destruction in the hands of the Iranian regime are an existential threat to the State of Israel and a significant threat to the wider world. The State of Israel will not allow a regime whose objective is to destroy the State of Israel to obtain weapons of mass destruction”.

The statement added that for “years, the Iranian regime has been waging a direct and indirect campaign of terror against the State of Israel, by funding and directing terrorist activities via its proxies across the Middle East, while advancing toward obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The Iranian regime is at the head of the axis responsible for all terrorist attacks against the State of Israel since the beginning of the Swords of Iron War, including by arming and funding the Hamas terror organization, which was responsible for the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre. During the Swords of Iron War, Iran even directly attacked Israel twice, firing hundreds of missiles toward the State of Israel.”

In a direct address to the Israeli public, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, placed the operation in a historic context. “Civilians of Israel, these are decisive days, we are currently at the start of a new phase in the operation to secure our future. The IDF began Operation ‘Rising Lion’ tonight, in order to strategically strike the threats from the Iranian regime against the State of Israel. We are amidst a historic campaign unlike any other. This is a critical operation to prevent an existential threat, by an enemy who is intent on destroying us,” he declared.

Zamir continued, “We cannot afford to wait for another time to operate, we have no other choice. Recent and past events of history have taught us that when the enemy is attempting to destroy us, we must not turn a blind eye. As such, we need to fight for our existence; freedom is given to those willing to fight for it.”

He added, “I warn that anyone who tries to challenge us will pay a heavy price. We are entering this operation together with one goal—to secure a safer future for the State of Israel and its civilians; in a unified effort and faith, we will win.”

The largest state in the region

Iran, the largest Middle Eastern state, spans an area of 1,648,195 square kilometers and is located approximately 1,500 kilometers from Israel.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the establishment of the fundamentalist Shi’ite Ayatollah regime in 1980, the Islamic defined its core missions: To defend the regime and Iran as a power, to fulfill the ideological objectives of the internal system responsible for maintaining order in Iran, and to export the revolution and its goals to its proxies throughout the Middle East.

Iran’s political leadership is headed by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and includes several bodies: The Office of the Supreme Leader, Khamenei, the Judiciary, the Presidency, Government ministries, and the key Supreme National Security Council.

The Council operates in a similar to Israel’s security cabinet, convening regularly under the presidency, and sometimes under the Supreme Leader Khamenei, It is responsible for coordinating the various security bodies and for additional strategic work.

Senior regime officials and security commanders reside in the Iranian capital of Tehran, where some 15 million people live.

Over the years, several mass protests have erupted in response to the Iranian regime’s actions, mostly driven by economic and political opposition..

Following the 2022 death in custody of a young Kurdish woman who was arrested for improperly wearing the hijab, protests involving thousands of demonstrators against the regime erupted, and lasted for some four months – the longest since the establishment of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

As a result of the protest, 525 civilians were killed, and 19,571 civilians were arrested.

The Iranian security apparatus

The Iranian security system includes two armies: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Army. The IRGC was established to protect the interests of the new regime, after, in the 1970s, the Iranian Army served the former ousted regime.

At the end of the Iran-Iraq War in 1988, Iran concluded that there was a clear need for two separate armies: The Iranian Army – responsible for the defense of the country, and the IRGC – tasked with promoting the interests and survival of the fundamentalist Iranian regime domestically and in the Middle East by using force against regime opponents and countries across the region.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces manages and synchronizes the various security organizations during routine times. A body called Emergency Headquarters commands the Iranian armed forces during emergencies. Iran’s security system is subordinate to the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

'UN conference on Israel-Palestinian conflict postponed, Macron says'

President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that a United Nations conference co-hosted between France and Saudi Arabia to work towards a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians has been postponed after Israel launched a military attack on Iran.

Macron told reporters that the conference, which had been planned for June 17-20, had been postponed for logistical reasons as members of the Palestinian Authority could not travel to New York and that it would be re-scheduled as soon as possible.

'How crucial is immigration for the US hotel industry?'

A U.S. crackdown on foreign-born workers could spell trouble for the hotel and hospitality industry, which has lobbied for years to expand the pathways for immigration to the United States to help fill over 1 million job vacancies.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would issue an immigration order soon, following a social media post in which he cited labor issues in the farm and hotel industries stemming from his immigration crackdown. But on Friday, the Washington Post reported that no such policy changes were under way, according to three people with knowledge of the administration’s immigration policies.

IMMIGRATION AND HOSPITALITY

In 2024, travel supported the jobs of 15 million U.S. workers and directly employed 8 million, with approximately one-third of those workers immigrants, according to the U.S. Travel Association and American Hotel and Lodging Association. There are about 1 million job openings in 2025.

Hotels and resorts have struggled to find enough Americans willing to work hospitality jobs, including seasonal or temporary jobs at ski resorts and amusement parks. The leisure and hospitality industries have quit rates higher than all other industries. The accommodation and food services subsector has experienced a quit rate consistently around or above 4% since July 2022, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

About 71% of the hotels that had job openings were unable to fill them despite active searches, according to a 2024 survey conducted by AHLA and Hireology, an employee management platform.

LOBBYING EFFORTS

U.S. Travel and AHLA have lobbied Congress for broader pathways for legal immigration in an effort to close these gaps.

The industry's priority was to push for expanding the H-2B visa program, which was capped at 66,000 visas a year, to bring more seasonal workers to the United States.

In March 2024, then-President Joe Biden signed the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, which authorizes the Department of Homeland Security to increase the number of H-2B temporary nonagricultural workers if the agency determines there are not enough American workers "willing, qualified, and able to perform temporary nonagricultural labor."

DHS and the Department of Labor in December published a joint temporary final rule increasing the limit on H-2B non-immigrant visas for fiscal year 2025.

The industry also supported legislation that looked to make it easier for temporary workers to return to the U.S. and allow people seeking asylum to work as soon as 30 days after applying for asylum.

EXECUTIVE AND UNION VIEWS

Industry executives, including those from Marriott and Hilton, have talked about the need for practical immigration solutions for years.

"One of the most important issues in our industry for time and eternity has been workforce ... and the need for comprehensive immigration reform," Hilton Worldwide CEO Chris Nassetta said at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in January, according to a report by Travel Weekly.

Labor union Unite HERE, which represents thousands of workers in U.S. hotels, casinos, and airports, a majority of whom are immigrants, said the union will continue to fight "the increasingly arbitrary rules" about who can and cannot live and travel to the United States.

The Culinary Workers Union, which represents hospitality workers in Las Vegas, rallied against escalating Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Nevada and pushed back against claims the Trump administration was only responding to people breaking the law.

Amazon’s healthcare business will be divided into six new units as part of a restructuring effort after the company lost a handful of top health executives in recent months, CNBC reported on Friday, citing the company.

The company has been working on an overhaul for the past several months, the report said, adding that the online retailer has not conducted any broad layoffs as part of the plan.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s chief medical officer, Sunita Mishra, stepped down last month and another top executive, Aaron Martin, who has been the vice president of the healthcare unit, is also set to step down, the report said.

Israeli Strikes On Iran Ongoing Through Friday As Death Toll Surpasses 100

Update(1330ET)There are reports that Israeli strikes on Iran have continued through Friday, with the WSJ reporting that up to two weeks of attacks could be coming.

"Israel's operation against Iran's nuclear program, military leadership and arsenal of missiles is nowhere near over, with Israel having planned out 14 days of operations, a senior Israeli official said," WSJ writes.

"The likely duration of the campaign fits with analysts' expectations that a single wave of strikes wouldn't be able to do enough damage to Iran's nuclear program and Israel's comprehensive approach of attacking Iran's facilities, leadership and arsenal at the same time to limit the possibility of a retaliatory strike," the report says.

Israel is bracing for potential big counterattack, and yet clearly Iran is struggling to even get its air defenses active in thwarting the Israeli airstrikes. Still, air defenses appear very active over the capital on Friday.

The Israel Defense Force has released a graphic showing the uranium enrichment site located beneath the Natanz Nuclear Facility in Central Iran, which was heavily targeted during today’s strikes by the Israeli Air Force.

State media reports that over 100 Iranian have been killed, with the casualty toll likely to continue to rise amid rescue efforts and emergency crews responding to sites hit.

"Go After Scum Of The Earth" - Al-Qaeda Urges Assassinate Trump, Vance, Musk, Rubio, Hegseth

by Debra Heine via American Greatness,

The leader of al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch is urging fellow Islamists in the United States to assassinate President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, tech billionaire Elon Musk, and other U.S. leaders, calling them “scum of the earth and its greatest criminals.”

In a chilling video message that appeared online Saturday, Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki encouraged his followers to assassinate the leaders because they support Israel’s war against Hamas.

“There are no red lines after what happened and is happening to our people in Gaza,” al-Awlaki said in his first propaganda video since taking over the terror group last year. “Reciprocity is legitimate.”

“I call upon every Muslim in the infidel, criminal, and arrogant United States … I am saying to all of them revenge, revenge!” he declared.

Al-Awlaki stressed that it doesn’t matter whether the terrorists are “Arab, American or other descent, what matters is that should be Muslims whose prophet is Muhammed.”  He correctly noted that there are roughly 4.5 million Muslims in the United States.

The al Qaeda leader went on to caution his followers hatch their assassination plots in secret.

“Do not consult anyone about killing infidel Americans,” he said, before specifying who should be targeted.

“Go after the scum of the earth and its greatest criminals: This is Trump and his vice president; this is Elon Musk, his advisor; these are his secretary of State and his secretary of Defense,” al-Awlaki said.

As the terrorist said these words, images of Trump (alongside Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America), Vance, Musk (with images of Musk’s business logos), Secretary of State Marco Rubio (with Ash Wednesday ashes on his forehead), and Secretary of State Pete Hegseth flashed across the screen.

Al-Awlaki encouraged his followers in the United States to also “go after their families” and “all those who have any ties or are close to the politicians in the White House.”

The half-hour propaganda video also included calls for lone-wolf terrorists to assassinate leaders in Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf Arab states over the war.

Al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch, known by the acronym AQAP, is considered the most dangerous branch of al-Qaeda, according to the Times of Israel.

Al-Awlaki already has a $6 million US bounty on his head, as Washington says he “has publicly called for attacks against the United States and its allies.” He replaced AQAP leader Khalid al-Batarfi, whose death was announced by the group in 2024.

AQAP seizing onto the Israel-Hamas war follows the efforts of Yemen’s Houthi rebels to do the same. The Iranian-backed group has launched missile attacks on Israel and targeted commercial vessels moving through the Red Sea corridor, as well as American warships.

The Trump administration launched an intense campaign of strikes on the Houthis, which only ended before the president’s recent trip to the Middle East.

It is estimated that AQAP has between 3,000 and 4,000 active fighters and passive members. The terrorists reportedly raise money by robbing banks, smuggling weapons, counterfeiting currencies and conducting ransom operations.

In his video message, Al-Awalaki praised those who have carried out antisemitic terror attacks on civilians.

“Do not leave a single safe place for Jews — just as they have not left any homes, shelters, or respite for the Palestinians,” he said. “Even hospitals are being bombed over the heads of the sick and wounded, and the heads of the women, children and the elderly. Take revenge.”

States take legal action as 23andMe attempts to sell customer genetic information amid bankruptcy

Bankrupt 23andMe is facing a lawsuit over its plans to sell customer genetic information.

Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia took legal action this week against 23andMe in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, the court overseeing the Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings that the genetic testing company entered earlier in the year.

The states contend 23andMe has “no right to sell their customers’ genetic identities to the highest bidder” unless the company “first obtain[s] express informed consent to the proposed transaction/transfer by each consumer impacted.”

They want the bankruptcy court to rule on “whether and to what extent” the genetic testing company can “sell and transfer to a third party such intimate customer data without first obtaining the express informed consent of its customers,” according to the filing.

In the filing, the states said they were “not objectively opposed to any sale” but “contend that express, informed consent by each customer is necessary before any transfer of that customer’s data can take place.”

The attorneys general that filed the lawsuit represent Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

“23andMe cannot auction millions of people’s personal genetic information without their consent,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement.

“New Yorkers and many others around the country trusted 23andMe with their private information, and they have a right to know what will be done with their information.”

A spokesperson for 23andMe told FOX Business that the arguments made by the attorneys general in the suit were “without merit.”

“The sale is permitted under 23andMe privacy policies and applicable law,” the spokesperson said.

“We required any bidder to adopt our policies and comply with applicable law as a condition to participating in our sales process. Customers will continue to have the same rights and protections in the hands of the winning bidder.”

The remaining bidders, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and TTAM Research Institute, “have committed to abide by 23andMe privacy policies, and will continue to operate 23andMe as it has always been operated,” according to the 23andMe spokesperson.

The states argued that 23andMe has “no right to sell their customers’ genetic identities to the highest bidder” unless the company “first obtain[s] express informed consent to the proposed transaction/transfer by each consumer impacted.”REUTERS

In May, New York-based Regeneron announced it had been named the successful bidder in the auction for “substantially all” of 23andMe’s assets with a $256 million bid.

23andMe subsequently received a $305 million bid from Anne Wojcicki-founded TTAM Research Institute, setting the stage for another auction.

The genetic testing company entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March to facilitate a sale of its business.

In its bankruptcy petition, the company had estimated a range of $100 million to $500 million for its assets, with estimated liabilities in the same range.

23andMe was originally founded in 2006.
