'Chinese-made ‘bone glue’ fixes fractures in just 3 minutes with one injection: report'

Scientists in China have developed a revolutionary new “bone glue” that can heal fractures, which could traditionally take months to heal, in a matter of minutes, according to a report.

Product “Bone-02’ was developed by a Chinese research team, which sought to fix orthopedic injuries that would generally require months of downtime and invasive surgeries that often include metal plate insertions, the Global Times reported.

Lin Xianfeng, associate chief orthopedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, in Hangzhou, said the adhesive can achieve precise fixation in a matter of minutes even in blood-rich environments.

The glue treatment comes in the form of a single injection and will “bond shattered bone fragments in just three minutes,” according to that report.

In one trial case, a patient with a wrist fracture received one injection via a mere 3 cm incision and was healed in just three minutes, Cho Sun Daily reported.

A surgery to repair the wrist would have required a metal plate and screws that would require a second surgery the following year to remove, the outlet reported.

After a three-month follow-up check-up, the patient’s fracture had fully healed without complications, that report claimed.

Researchers said they were inspired by oysters — namely the mollusk’s ability to stick to underwater surfaces that are difficult for traditional adhesives to manage, Interesting Engineering reported.

Unlike ordinary glues, the bio-glue secreted by oysters forms pressure and erosion resistant bonds in moist, salty, wet, and constantly moving conditions, that outlet explained.

The creators of “Bone-02” further stated that the substance demonstrated a maximum bonding force of over 400 pounds, the Global Times said.

“Bone-02” can also be naturally absorbed by the body as the bone heals, eliminating the need for a second surgery to remove implants, according to the substance’s creators.

Initial tests also indicate that using the bone-glue produces fewer infections than metal plate procedures.

IDF Controls Over Half Of Gaza City Less Than 2 Weeks Into Offensive

It was only in the middle of September that the Israeli military launched its major ground offensive against Gaza City, which is the Gaza Strip's most populous place.

Now, two weeks into the operation, and Israeli media is reporting that the IDF has already taken over more than half of the city. Among the Strip's total prewar population of 2.2 million, about one-third lived in Gaza City or its environs. Nearly all have fled the main parts of the city amid the full Israeli assault.

Jerusalem Post is reporting that "The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control more than half of Gaza City, and 800,000 residents have left the area." This also comes amid intensifying airstrikes over the last days.

The publication indicated that 120 sites were targeted in airstrikes over a single 24-hour period between Friday and Saturday, with the IDF saying it "continues to act against terrorist organizations throughout the Strip" and "is expanding operations in the Gaza City area."

Israeli army "struck several observation posts used by Hamas militants, as well as militant assembly points and underground terrorist facilities" - the statement said.

Significant neighborhoods now under effective IDF control have been listed as Tel al-Hawa in the southwest, nearby Al-Nadi, as well as Sheikh Ajleen which has seen heavy action, and Zeitoun, in the southeast.

There is still a big coming fight expected in an area not yet under IDF control, as JPost describes:

Among the Gaza City neighborhoods not yet under IDF control is Al-Rimal. It has been home to Gaza’s elite and senior Hamas figures. The area is considered the city’s "heart," hosting decades of banking infrastructure, Palestinian government institutions, universities, and media sites.

Al Jazeera is reporting that at least 91 Palestinians have been killed across the Strip on Saturday amid relentless shelling and airstrikes. Some 45 of these deaths were in Gaza City.

Various world leaders continuing ramping up the pressure on Israel in the context of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York.

For example, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud ripped Israeli policy, in another clear sign that Riyadh is no closer to signing on to the Abraham Accords.

He decried to the UN the "brutal and unchecked practices of the occupying forces, including starvation, forced displacement and systematic killing" of Palestinian civilians.

"This is done in complete disregard of the historic and legal rights of the Palestinian people, with an aim to erase their legitimate rights," Al Saud added.

Denmark Bans Civilian Drones Near EU Leaders Visit After New Military Sightings

Denmark banned the use of civilian drones for five days next week as it steps up security ahead of a European Union summit in Copenhagen.

The move is intended to eliminate the risk of confusing civilian-operated aircraft with hostile drones during the congregation of EU government leaders, the transport ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Why Microsoft Has Lower Borrowing Costs Than the U.S.

Usually, when investors are willing to lend to companies at a lower yield than the government, it’s because the country faces financial armageddon and the government default risk is rising. Two pristine-rated bonds from Microsoft that trade at lower yields than equivalent Treasurys tell us something different, though: Demand for corporate bonds is running superhot.

Among U.S. corporate bonds rated AAA, two in the main index currently trade a little below the equivalent yield on Treasurys, known as a negative spread. This is extremely unusual, both because companies are in principle much more likely to default than the government that can tax them, and because the corporate bonds are harder to trade, so should yield a little more to compensate buyers for the difficulty in selling them quickly.

Yet, demand for high-quality corporate bonds has been so great that it’s driven the ICE BofA AAA U.S. Corporate index to a spread of only 0.3 percentage point over Treasurys, a tiny reward for the additional risks of holding company debt and far below the 2-plus points reached in the past two recessions. It’s small enough that some of the best bonds get pushed to yield less than the government. It makes no sense.

“You’re getting a lower yield for something that’s less liquid too,” says Mike Riddell, a bond fund manager at Fidelity International. He thinks Microsoft and other top-rated bonds should offer a yield 0.15 to 0.2 points above Treasurys purely for being harder to trade, without even considering the tiny risk of default.

There are several theories for why anyone would pay more for a bond from Microsoft or, early last week, Johnson & Johnson, than for a Treasury.

Start, though, with a theory no one believes: They’re safer. All these bonds are rated AAA, while the U.S. has lost its top rating from all of the major credit-rating firms. Microsoft is sitting on $95 billion of cash and has only $40 billion of long-term debt. It is immensely profitable and popular with investors for its nascent artificial-intelligence business.

By contrast, the government owes the public $30 trillion and has spent more than it receives every year since 2001.

However, the bloated federal budget deficit means massive issuance of Treasurys. At the same time, corporate profitability has suppressed the need for the highest-quality companies to borrow. The combination of more Treasurys and fewer top-grade corporate bonds has naturally squeezed the gap between their yields.

“The supply-demand imbalance in [corporate] credit is very unpleasant—there’s just so little supply and so much money on the sidelines trying to chase it,” said Christian Mueller-Glissmann, head of asset allocation research at Goldman Sachs.

Get the spread tight enough, and it’s much easier for the addition of a few oddities to push some bonds to trade with negative spreads.

Three theories are plausible: indexing, a focus on yield and the power of pension funds.

spreads overall have compressed so much. What’s not to like about a yield of 3.67% locked in until June 2027, from a company as rock solid as Microsoft? Who cares if you could get 3.69% on a recently issued Treasury maturing a month later, or slightly more still on an old Treasury bond maturing a month earlier? Professional bond investors might huff about the risk of the spread rising—a genuine risk—but if you plan to hold to maturity, maybe you don’t care that much.

Pension funds and insurers increasingly look at a different measure than the spread of a bond yield compared with Treasurys, too: They care more about the spread over comparable interest-rate swaps, which they use to hedge out some of the exposure to rate changes. Focus on what’s known as the swap spread, and the fact that Treasurys offer both better yield and better liquidity than some of these bonds might be less visible.

We don’t need to worry about a U.S. default soon, despite the fiscal quagmire the politicians love to wade about in. But anyone buying high-quality corporate bonds should be concerned about the lack of reward for taking on the extra risks.

Orban, Fico Put on United Front to Rebuff Calls on Russia Energy

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak counterpart Robert Fico expressed defiance over pressure to quit Russian oil during a joint appearance on the border of the two countries Sunday.

“No one should tell us where to get our gas and oil,” Slovak leader Fico told a small crowd in Esztergom, Hungary, “because according to international law, it is a sovereign country that decides on its own energy mix.”

In First, Zelensky Confirms Israel Sent Patriot Missile Battery To Ukraine, With More On Way

On Saturday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed for the first time ever that Israel has supplied his country with a Patriot air defense system. He indicated it has already been operational for several weeks.

"The system has been installed," Zelensky said while boasting that at least two more batteries from Israel are expected to arrive at some point in the fall.

It was a surprised announcement, given that for over three years of the Ukraine war, Israel has been persistent in resisting calls to send arms to Israel, given it is more concerned with keeping its delicate relations with Moscow positive. Until now it had only sent non-lethal and humanitarian aid.

Also, Russia has long maintained a military presence on the Mediterranean, along Syria's coast. But times have changed, and Russia could be packing up its Syrian naval and air bases, given the December overthrow of its ally Assad and the Jolani regime being installed in Damascus. Moscow is suddenly left with less leverage in the region, and has pivoted to growing closer with Iran, which has supplied it with kamikaze drones used in Ukraine.

It likely rubbed Tel Aviv the wrong way seeing Russia deepen its economic, defense, and technological cooperation with Iran, so in light of all of this it has softened its resistance to arming Ukraine.

Back in June,  Israel's ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky was the first to let slip that Patriot systems would protect Ukrainian cities, which was a risk given it has angered Russia. Yet the Ukrainian government had never officially acknowledged this.

But to get US-supplied Patriots to Ukraine, there's been some trickery and serious diplomatic maneuvering involved in order to make it appear all very 'indirect' - in part to prevent Israel from provoking too much wrath out of Moscow.

Back in May, the NY Times presented how the scheme would work:

A Patriot air-defense system that was based in Israel will be sent to Ukraine after it is refurbished, four current and former U.S. officials said in recent days, and Western allies are discussing the logistics of Germany or Greece giving another one.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions, declined to describe President Trump’s view of the decision to transfer more Patriot systems to Ukraine.

And Kyiv Post has newly acknowledged, "The deployment confirmed an intricate plan, first reported by US media in May, that involved Washington requesting that Israel return an older Patriot system for refurbishment before it was routed to Kyiv."

Ukraine is seeking to establish a layered permanent defensive air shield based on advanced systems provided by the West. The Trump administration has largely put the brakes on simply donating arms directly, but wants Europe and allies to foot the bill and make the transfers.

Left slammed for celebrating fugitive activist Assata Shakur, who executed NJ state trooper

The Chicago Teachers Union is facing backlash after posting a tribute honoring Assata Shakur — the fugitive Black liberation activist who recently died after escaping a life sentence for the murder of a New Jersey state trooper in 1973.

The CTU, which represents more than 27,000 members, hailed Shakur, who was living in Cuba following her prison break 46 years ago, as “a revolutionary fighter,” in a social media post, drawing immediate condemnation online, including from New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.

“Shameful and depraved,” Murphy wrote on X about the CTU’s praise.

“She was convicted of the murder New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, who was executed in cold blood,” he said.

“There are so many worthy heroes to celebrate. She is not one of them.”

The Democratic Socialists of America account also posted a fawning tribute to Shakur, writing: “We vow to honor her legacy by recognizing our duty to fight for our freedom, to win, to love and protect one another because we have nothing to lose but our chains.”

Shakur was found guilty in 1977 of murder, armed robbery and other crimes and was sentenced to life in prison.AP

Shakur, who was born Joanne Deborah Chesimard, died Thursday at age 78 in the capital city of Havana due to “health conditions and advanced age,” Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement

She and two others were involved in a gunfight with New Jersey State Police troopers following a highway traffic stop on May 2, 1973, which saw Trooper Werner Foerster killed and another officer wounded.

Shakur was found guilty in 1977 of murder, armed robbery and other crimes and was sentenced to life in prison, only to escape in November 1979, with her supporters maintaining that she was pursued for crimes she didn’t commit or that were justified.

“Assata refused to be silenced,” the CTU wrote. “She taught us that “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win.

“We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains,” the union added.

Many were quick to point out the controversy surrounding Assata, with a Community Note added to the CTU’s post pointing out Shakur’s conviction and her status on the FBI’s 2013 Most Wanted Terrorists list.

“She was a terrorist and murderer and I’m saying this as a civil rights attorney,” New York-based lawyer Andrew Laufer wrote on X.

How about we honor the man she murdered instead,” another account on X wrote.

“She’s a cop killing terrorist. Shame on you,” another user on X added.

“This is really such a disgrace,” the post said. “I find it hard to believe that any organization, other than a terrorist organization, would openly celebrate this terrorist murderer.”
