Soldiers appeared on Benin's national television on Sunday, announcing that the government will be dissolved.
In what appears to be a military coup, the soldiers, from a group calling itself the "Military Committee for Refoundation," led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, said that Benin President Patrice Talon, who has been serving as the head of state since 2016, has been overthrown.
The French embassy in the country previously said that there were reports of gunfire close to Talon's residency, urging the French community to stay at home. It is currently not known where Talon is.
