China imposes additional 55% tariff on some beef imports

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) announced on Wednesday that it decided to impose an additional 55% tariff on imported beef, starting from January 1, 2026. The duties will apply to imports that exceed country-specific quotas that have been set for Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

The ministry stressed the measure will be in force for three years until the end of 2028, but noted it could review the measures during the period.

Beijing added that the tariff will not apply to beef imports from countries whose import share does not exceed 3%.
