US Vigilant Against Possible Domestic Attacks Amid Iran War: Hegseth

by Savannah Hulsey Pointer via The Epoch Times,

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth says the Trump administration is monitoring for any sleeper cell activity in the United States.

Hegseth’s March 2 comments came after questions about a possible attack on the homeland in response to the strikes on Iran.

“We’re ready for that,” the secretary told reporters at the Pentagon.

“We’ve seen these types of folks before, and the American people can rest assured that we’re vigilant.”

Hegseth was also questioned about the March 1 shooting that took place in Austin, Texas, that resulted in multiple casualties.

According to reports from Austin Police, an armed man opened fire outside a bar, killing two and wounding 14 others.

FBI official Alex Doran told reporters that the shooter’s motivation had not been established. Evidence found on the individual and in his vehicle, however, suggests a “potential nexus to terrorism,” but “it’s still too early to make a determination,” he said.

When questioned about the attack over the weekend, Hegseth said that the event “does not change [Operation Epic Fury] at all.”

The operation in Iran is not slowing down, with Pentagon officials saying that additional U.S. forces will continue to flow into the Middle East.

The strikes on Iran have been termed “major combat operations,” and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine says hundreds of land and sea missions have been launched in Operation Epic Fury.

Caine offered a briefing alongside Hegseth, saying the U.S. military’s mission is to “protect and defend ourselves, and together with our regional partners, prevent Iran from the ability to project power outside of its borders.”

Hegseth and Caine emphasized the preparation that went into the recent military strike, saying the operation in Iran was the result of months, even years, of planning.

However, according to the general, the mission is not yet complete.

“We expect to take additional losses, and as always, we will work to minimize U.S. losses,” Caine added.

“The effort continues to scale,” Caine said, going on to describe the equipment used and extended efforts to take out Iranian weapons systems.

“I am proud today, as I am every day, to stand as a member of America’s Joint Force. There is no mission too complex, no distance too great, and no adversary too determined for the men and women who wear our nation’s uniform.”

"Severely Curbed": Gold Shipments Through Dubai Stalled In Wake Of Strikes On Iran

Gold shipments through Dubai are set to stall for several days after airlines suspended flights amid U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s response, according to three industry sources and Reuters.

Because gold is typically transported by air for security and insurance reasons, the cancellations are expected to sharply limit physical flows.

Reuters writes that Dubai is a key supplier to Switzerland, Hong Kong and India. Sources said the broader impact on global supply will depend on how long the disruption lasts. They spoke on condition of anonymity.

Gold futures jumped 3% on Monday morning prior to the cash open in New York. The record high stands at $5,594.82, set on January 29.

Despite the shipping disruption, traders said major financial hubs — including China, India, New York, London and Zurich — remain operational, and market activity on Monday is expected to be driven mainly by financial flows rather than physical supply.

Elsewhere in the world of precious metals, on COMEX, gold delivery volume for February matched what was seen in December.

Despite being below the big months over the last year (Feb/Apr/Oct 2025), the delivery volume was still very strong on an overall historical basis. Inventory heading into March looked sufficient, but it'll be interesting to see how that landscape has shifted now in the wake of the new geopolitical turmoil.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued on Monday an evacuation order for several cities and villages in southern Lebanon, announcing an imminent strike.

"Hezbollah's activities force the IDF to act against it without any intention of harming you. To ensure your safety, you must evacuate immediately," IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee shared on X.

The majority of targeted towns are located in the southern districts of the country, including Tyre, Marjayoun and Bint Jbeil.

IDF issues evacuation notice to Tehran residents

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued on Monday an evacuation order to residents of Tehran, specifically those in the Evin neighborhood, "in the area of the headquarters of the radio and television."

"In the coming hours, the IDF will act as it has done in recent days around Tehran to target the Iranian regime's military infrastructure. Dear Iranian citizens, for your safety and security, we ask you to immediately evacuate the designated area as shown on the map. Your presence in this area puts your life at risk," IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a post on X.

Earlier today, the Israeli army also issued an evacuation warning for several cities in southern Lebanon, signaling an imminent strike.

IRGC declares Strait of Hormuz closed

Adviser to the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ebrahim Jabari, declared on Monday that the Strait of Hormuz has been officially closed amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States.

"Iran would set any ship that wants to pass on fire," Jabari said in a video message, adding that Tehran will also "hit their pipelines in the region, and we will not allow oil to be exported from this region so that they are in a tight spot."

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said yesterday that the nation does not intend to close the route, which is used to deliver about 20% of the world's oil shipments.

'Araghchi: Iran not at war with countries in the region'

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke on state TV on Monday, underlining that Tehran is "not at war with regional countries" but rather with the United States.

He further added that the countries in the region should "pressure the US" over its actions against Iran, underlining that Washington "betrayed diplomacy" when it decided to carry out strikes. Talking about the US military bases, Araghchi mentioned that even if they are not targeting Iran, they are still legitimate targets. "US soldiers fleeing to hotels will not prevent them from being targeted," he stated.

On the killing of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the minister remarked that his assassination was a "religious crime" that will have consequences.

Hegseth rallies US troops at ‘turning point America has waited for since 1979’

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told US forces Monday to “stay focused” and trust President Trump as Operation Epic Fury targeting Iran entered its third day.

“This is your moment. This is the generational turning point America has waited for since 1979,” Hegseth proclaimed during a Pentagon news conference alongside top general Dan “Raizin” Caine. “Don’t listen to the noise. Just stay focused. Our commander in chief is steady at the wheel.”

“We face a determined enemy,” the secretary said, referring to Iran, “but you are better.”

Hegseth and Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, took the podium following a weekend of air attacks by the US and Israel that killed four dozen members of Tehran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — while at least four American service members have died and four others seriously wounded in a retaliatory attack by Tehran.

“For 47 long years, the expansionist and Islamist regime in Tehran has waged savage, one-sided war against America,” Hegseth said. “They didn’t always declare it openly, except for their constant chants of ‘Death to America’; they did it through the blood of our people.”

“We didn’t start this war,” he added, “but under President Trump, we are finishing it.

In a message to the Iranian people, Hegseth urged citizens to “take advantage of this incredible opportunity” to cast off their theocratic overlords.

“President Trump has been clear: Now is your time,” Hegseth said. “Choose wisely.”

When Caine’s turn came to speak, he admitted that officials “expect to take additional losses, and as always, we will work to minimize US losses.”

“This is not a single overnight operation. The military objectives that CENTCOM and the Joint Force have been tasked with will take some time to achieve — and in some cases will be difficult and gritty work,” said Caine, later emphasizing: “These are major combat operations.”

Operation Epic Fury kicked off around 1:15 a.m. ET Saturday (9:45 a.m. Tehran time) after 30 days of military buildup, according to Caine.

More than 1,000 targets were hit within the first 24 hours of the operation, including radio facilities, command and control infrastructure, naval forces, ballistic missile sites, and intelligence infrastructure, with cyberattacks thrown in to “daze and confuse” Iran, the top general revealed.

“More than 100 aircraft” were launched in “a single synchronized wave,” said Caine, adding that the operation to take out Khamenei “was a daylight strike … conducted by the Israel Defense Forces and enabled by the US intelligence community.”

“This was a massive, overwhelming attack across all domains of warfare,” Caine said.

Hegseth took pains to distinguish the current conflict from George W. Bush’s war to overthrow Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

“This is not Iraq. This is not endless,” the war secretary said. “I was there for both. Our generation knows better, and so does this president. He called the last 20 years of nation-building wars dumb, and he’s right. This is the opposite.”

Hegseth emphasized that the initial goals of Operation Epic Fury were threefold: “Destroy the missile threat [from Iran], destroy the [Iranian] navy, no nukes.”

“This is not a so-called ‘regime change war,'” he added, “but the regime sure did change, and the world is better off for it.”
