'Bezos family donates $100M to charity funding NYC preschool education'

The Bezos Family Foundation will pump as much as $150 million into an anti-poverty charity to help fund early childhood education in New York — as Mayor Zohran Mamdani pushes his ambitious universal free child-care agenda.

The charity, Robin Hood, unveiled a $1 billion endowment campaign on Monday aimed at cementing its longstanding anti-poverty mission, anchored by a $100 million donation from the Bezos family to create the Jackie Bezos Endowment for Early Childhood, according to a press release.

The family also pledged an additional $25 million, subject to a match, for a total contribution of $150 million for the endowment named after billionaire Jeff Bezos’s late mother.

The gift positions Robin Hood, which has already invested $3 billion to fight poverty in the Big Apple, as a major player in the city’s escalating fight over affordable childcare.

“My mother saw the innate potential in every child and never stopped working to ensure that potential was met,” Mark Bezos said of his mother, Jackie, who served for a decade on the organization’s board.

“This gift honors her legacy and makes permanent the work she helped build at Robin Hood,” Bezos added.

Robin Hood CEO Richard Buery Jr. added in an interview with the New York Times that the money will be spent in the near term to drive an “immediate impact” in stabilizing the city’s strained child-care system.

“In a world where it’s so hard to break through the noise, where even people who should be able to agree on facts can’t agree on facts, I think this is a place where we have a set of facts all aligning and pointing in one direction,” Buery told the outlet.

The endowment is already 70% funded and will not focus solely on early childhood education, he said.

The announcement comes as Mamdani has made universal, free childcare one of the core promises of his socialist administration.

Hizzoner is hoping to raise $20 million for a “childcare action fund” within the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City — and has raised $3.5 million for this fund thus far, the Times reported.

Robin Hood typically prefers to distribute its own money, but some of its funds still do flow into city programs, the outlet reported.

Jenna Lyle, a spokeswoman for Mamdani, told the Times in a statement that the city was “proud” to see Robin Hood’s commitment to expanding childcare.

“To deliver free, universal childcare across all five boroughs, it is going to take a citywide effort — government, providers, working families, labor, philanthropy, and New Yorkers in all five boroughs,” she said.

City Hall did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Mamdani skipped Robin Hood’s star-studded annual gala at the Javits Center on Monday night, where the donation was announced, according to the report.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos sat near the stage while former Mayor Mike Bloomberg mingled with celebrity guests. Gov. Kathy Hochul also attended the black-tie event, which raised $73 million for Robin Hood’s poverty-fighting programs, the publication reported.

Chair of the Robin Hood Board of Directors, Kenneth Tropin, called the new endowment campaign critical to ensuring the organization can continue responding to crises “for generations to come.”

“Robin Hood has become essential to the fabric of New York City and is an organization so critical to those in need in New York City. We need to ensure that for decades to come, our mission of supporting New Yorkers’ most vulnerable is sustained,”  Tropin said in a statement.

“Since the beginning, we have stood with New Yorkers in their darkest hours — after 9/11, Superstorm Sandy, and during COVID-19 — and in the quiet, daily work of building pathways out of poverty. This campaign ensures Robin Hood will be here to support New Yorkers for generations to come,” Tropin said.

Vacationing doc who stepped in to treat hantavirus patients on MV Hondius tests positive

A vacationing doctor who stepped in to treat hantavirus patients on the MV Hondius after the ship’s chief medic fell ill is isolating inside a biocontainment unit after also contracting the virus.

Retired oncologist Stephen Kornfeld was put in isolation after landing in Omaha, Nebraska – but told CNN Tuesday he’s feeling wonderful and currently showing no symptoms.

Kornfeld, one of 16 passengers who arrived in Omaha Monday, said he experienced flu-like symptoms while at sea — unaware that it could be hantavirus.

“I had three days of night sweats, a lot of chills, some mild respiratory problems, and a lot of fatigue,” he said.

“While the night sweats and the respiratory symptoms cleared up pretty quickly, fatigue lingered for about two-and-a-half weeks.”

Kornfeld, from Oregon, treated hantavirus patients when the ship’s chief medic fell ill – and was tested for the virus. Two of his samples were sent to the Netherlands, and one returned a “faintly positive” result.

He is being quarantined in the unit out of an abundance of caution after his test result was forwarded onto the authorities.

“I feel great, I feel wonderful, 100%,” he said. “It’s still possible that the test represents an evolving disease, and I will get symptoms down the road. This is why I’m in the biocontainment unit.”

Kornfeld is expected to receive more test results by Friday. If negative, he will be reunited with the other 15 passengers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Two others, including one who tested positive and another showing mild symptoms, were taken to Emory University’s Serious Communicable Diseases Unit for further evaluation, officials said.

Passengers are being monitored for 42 days – the virus’s incubation period — but authorities have always maintained the risk to Americans is low, something which has been echoed by Kornfeld.

“This is a very secure facility. So if I am to get sick, there’s no way that virus is getting out of this building,” he said.

Kornfeld previously told CNN how he “fell into the role of becoming the ship’s doctor” and he treated patients without fully realizing it was hantavirus.

He said how he didn’t really feel “super vulnerable” – despite the limited protective equipment on board the ship.

“You’re just trying to do the best you can in the circumstances with somewhat limited resources on a cruise,” he said.

The ship was stocked with anti-inflammatory meds and oxygen tanks – but wasn’t kitted out with scanners that could detect hantavirus, Kornfeld told the Atlantic.

A total of 94 passengers were evacuated from the ship on Sunday after it docked in Tenerife, Spain. The ship’s docking location sparked fury among politicians and some locals amid fears of the COVID pandemic.

Health officials have since revealed 11 people on board the ship contracted the Andes strain of the virus, which carries a 40% mortality rate.

But, possible hantavirus cases have been reported among some who were not on board the ship.

A resident living in Winnebago County, Illinois, may have caught the virus when cleaning a home where rodent droppings were present, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Tuesday. Their symptoms were mild and they didn’t require hospitalization.

Five other Americans are also being monitored for hantavirus despite not stepping foot on the ship.

Two New Jersey residents, two Marylanders, and one Californian are in isolation under the strict supervision of health department officials after they all took international flights that included passengers from the cruise.

Jones Beach to host first-ever patriotic drone display for Memorial Day, air show to move to July 4th

Long Island’s popular Memorial Day air show is going futuristic this year, trading its iconic fighter jet performance for a patriotic light show featuring 1,000 drones over the Atlantic Ocean.

The show’s first-ever drone performance, scheduled for 20 minutes on May 24 at 9 p.m., bumps the traditional air show to the Fourth of July weekend — July 5 and 6 — as part of the state’s broader celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence

The flying robots will be sent soaring up to 400 feet in the air, synchronized to patriotic music, and form 3D-moving images across the nighttime sky depicting various symbols such as bald eagles, Uncle Sam’s hat, and, of course, the American flag.

“These events on Long Island are an exciting part of what is happening across New York State,” Parks, Rec and Historic Preservation Commissioner Kathy Moser said.Bucket List – Long Island

“These events on Long Island are an exciting part of what is happening across New York State as we share the compelling stories of the people who shaped the American Revolution with our Revisit the Revolution initiative,” New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Acting Commissioner Kathy Moser said.

The drone show, organized by Gov. Kathy Hochul, the New York State Legislature and the NYS 250th Commemoration Commission, is being designed by Grizzly Entertainment — the same company behind Nassau County’s 9/11 drone show tribute in Bethpage last year.

The Navy Blue Angels will soar through the skies a month later, on July 5 and 6, as part of the celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

This year, the Blue Angels will also be joined by the Canadian Snowbirds, the US Army Golden Knights, and the Navy’s F-35C Lightning II Demo Team, and others, while a fireworks show is also set for July 4 at 9:30 p.m.

Memorial Day weekend at Jones Beach won’t just be about the drones.

Visitors can also catch Revolutionary War reenactors camping out as the all-Black 1st Rhode Island Regiment and the 5th New York Regiment, George Washington and other founding fathers trotting in on horseback, and more actors playing the four New York signers of the Declaration of Independence and Long Island’s own Culper Spy Ring.

Colonial cooking, fife and drum musical performances, inflatable play areas, and history-themed family games will fill out the rest of the evening while residents wait for the nighttime drone show, state officials detailed.

“As we commemorate 250 years since our nation’s birth, special events – like those at Jones Beach, and our other State Parks and historic sites – offer residents and visitors alike a unique opportunity to explore and experience different regions of the state, and complement any getaway or extended vacation,” Empire State Development President Hope Knight said.
