Germany could start Covid-19 vaccinations this year

  • A plan being developed by Germany and German-based BioNTech (BNTX +7.9%) would have doses of vaccine currently being held in central storage be shipped to more than 60 regional vaccine centers within hours of approval, reports the WSJ.
  • It's possible this would happen before year-end, depending on the results of clinical trials and subsequent EMEA approval.
  • BioNTech is currently storing doses its vaccine - developed in partnership with Pfizer (PFE -0.8%) - at a secret transport hub.
  • The Germans are also putting together detailed plans for who the initial recipients will be - health-care workers, the elderly, clinically vulnerable people, law-enforcement officials and people living in crowded conditions.
  • Leave it to the Germans for organization. The actions there stand in contrast to a number of other European countries, as well as the U.S., where the planning doesn't appear to be at such an advanced stage.
