More than 1 in 3 beneficiaries transition insurance 12 months before or after giving birth, a study published in JAMA Network Open Nov. 3 found.
The study, authored by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences, examined over 97,000 births in Massachusetts from 2015 to 2017.
Beneficiaries covered by Medicaid and Medicare were more likely than those with commercial insurance to transition between insurance providers postpartum.
Previous research cited in the study shows insurance continuity is important to improve birth outcomes and reduce perinatal morbidity and mortality.
