NYC slashing suspect in custody after apparent random attack on tourist

The NYPD has arrested 25-year-old Joshua Zinberg in connection with the unprovoked slashing of a Danish tourist on the Upper West Side.

Zinberg, now facing multiple charges including attempted murder and assault, was apprehended in front of his apartment less than 24 hours after the attack. Police say that Zinberg's own mother helped authorities locate him.

According to police, the attack happened just before 10:30 a.m. on West 86th Street.

Surveillance video showed the tourist walking with two friends when suddenly a man in a gray t-shirt, dark-colored workout shorts and sneakers came running up behind him with a knife.

"He slashed this man and almost cut off his ear completely and as he ran off down the street, he was just screaming obscenities," a witness said.

Police say the victim sustained deep slashes to his ear and cheek and a dislocated jaw. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The attack follows another recent deadly stabbing spree involving a homeless man with mental health issues, who allegedly stabbed and killed three people earlier this week.

Zinberg is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first and second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
