Rand Paul: Denver mayor could be removed over deportation cooperation stance

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said he thinks the mayor of Denver could be removed from office if he attempts to block President-elect Trump’s plan for mass deportations.

“I would say that the mayor of Denver, if he’s going to resist federal law — which, there’s a long-standing history of the supremacy of federal law — he’s going to resist that, it will go all the way to the Supreme Court,” Paul said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“And I would suspect that he would be removed from office.”

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D) has vowed to protect migrants in his community as the Trump transition team promises it will crack down on immigration after taking office, particularly in sanctuary cities.

Sanctuary cities are municipalities that generally limit or prevent their local authorities from cooperating with the federal government in enforcing immigration laws.

In an earlier interview with Denverite, Johnston said he would use Denver’s police force to stop federal forces from deporting migrants. In an interview Friday with 9News, he walked back those comments but said he believes local citizens will help stop the planned deportations.

Johnston said he would protest the deportations and “would expect other residents would do the same.”

Trump has tapped Tom Homan as his border czar, looking to move swiftly on immigration promises he made on the campaign trail. Johnston said he was not afraid of Homan’s claim that he would arrest leaders who disobey the federal government.

“I think the goal is, we want to be able to negotiate with reasonable people how to solve hard problems,” Johnston said.

Paul said Sunday that he doesn’t know if Johnston could face criminal prosecution for not complying with the Trump administration, but “he will lose.”

“People need to realize that what he is … offering is a form of insurrection, where states resist the federal government,” Rand said. “Most people objected to that and rejected that long ago.”

“So, I think the mayor of Denver is on the wrong side of history, and really, I think will face legal ramifications if he doesn’t obey the federal law,”

The Kentucky senator said he is supportive of Trump’s immigration plan, particularly going after criminals.
