The climate protection plans of the CDU/CSU and SPD have met with rejection from the Green parliamentary group. The expected coalition partners were putting Germany's climate targets at risk, MP Julia Verlinden told the German Press Agency in Berlin.
Warning of a gas renaissance
"Under the CDU and SPD, gas and the well-funded fossil fuel lobby could experience a renaissance. Black-Red is displaying an insane obsession with climate-damaging natural gas and disregarding the climate crisis," criticized Verlinden. "Countless new gas-fired power plants" are to be built without a mandatory switch to hydrogen. She warned against drilling near the sensitive Wadden Sea ecosystem.
According to the coalition agreement, Black-Red wants to enable "long-term, diversified, favorable gas supply contracts with international gas suppliers". Verlinden fears that US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin could be hiding behind this. This could make Germany dependent and threaten its security.
Gas heating soon to be unaffordable?
Verlinden also spoke out against the planned end to the heating law. "That would be nothing more than an invitation to continue relying on fossil gas heating systems. It is clear that these will soon become unaffordable." She spoke of a cost trap. The CO2 price, which makes heating and refueling more expensive, is set to rise in the coming years
