Costco says it will not carry abortion pill, following pressure from religious investors

Costco will not sell the abortion pill at any of its more than 500 pharmacy locations, citing a lack of demand for the product, according to reporting from Bloomberg.

A group of faith-based activists attempted to persuade Costco not to offer the pill, Bloomberg reported. That group is now turning their efforts towards CVS and Walgreens.

The Issaquah, Washington-based warehouse retailer told Bloomberg it hasn’t seen shopper demand for the mifepristone pill.

Mifepristone, when combined with misoprostol, ends a pregnancy within 10 weeks of gestation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it in 2000. The pill blocks progesterone, a hormone that helps maintain the uterine lining during pregnancy.

CVS and Walgreens began dispensing the abortion pill in 2024. Walgreens initially declined to offer it, prompting California Governor Gavin Newsom to cancel a $54 million contract with the pharmacy chain.

Walmart and Target do not offer the abortion pill.

Costco’s decision is unlikely to disrupt the sales momentum it has built. The retailer reported net sales of $20.89 billion in July, reflecting an 8.5% year-over-year increase. For the first 48 weeks of the fiscal year, net sales rose 8.1% to $248.35 billion.

Comparable sales in the U.S., excluding changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange rates, increased by 6.5% compared to July 2024.
