NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday that allies have agreed on "two workstreams" on Greenland and Arctic security, including one focused on NATO taking "more responsibility for the defense."
Speaking at the European Parliament, Rutte said that the second stream involves "Denmark, Greenland, and the United States" and will continue in a "trilateral setting." He noted the talks are addressing key challenges linked to "China and Russia," both "in a military sense and in an economic sense," and how to prevent them from gaining access in the Arctic region.
He stressed the need to look at "how we can as NATO collectively defend the Arctic forward," warning that "the Chinese are more and more active" in the region and that the issue must be addressed collectively by allies.
