OpenAI said to propose 5% stake for US gov't

OpenAI has floated the idea of transferring a 5% stake to the United States government as part of early talks with the administration, the Financial Times reported, citing two people familiar with the discussions.

CEO Sam Altman reportedly argued that public ownership would allow citizens to share in the financial gains of artificial intelligence and has raised the proposal directly with US President Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

According to the media outlet, the plan could extend to other American AI developers, though it remains unclear if rivals such as Anthropic, Google or Meta would agree.
