EU states ready to join new Lebanon mission against Iran-backed Hezbollah

More than 10 European Union member states are willing to contribute personnel and resources to a proposed military and civilian mission to advise and train Lebanese forces, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday.

The mission is intended to strengthen Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces, helping free up the Lebanese army to focus on disarming the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

Discussions over the possible EU mission come as the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon is due to expire at the end of 2026.
