PETA wants NYC garbage control to thin rat herd rather than massive rodent kills

The crusading animal activists of PETA are blaming the city’s rampant rat explosion on “disgusting human behavior” — insisting thinning the herd shouldn’t include rodents’ “gruesome, painful” deaths.

The group’s concerns about rat control included a call to Mayor Eric Adams’ office last week.

“I don’t think any of us want to see the city filled with rats the way it is right now and that includes PETA and other people who care about animals,” the group’s communications director Ashley Byrne told The Post on Thursday.

“The rats you see on the streets are still sensitive, intelligent animals and they deserve better than to be killed in gruesome, painful ways,” she asserted.

Byrne, a 13-year Brooklyn resident, argued residents only have themselves to blame for the rat proliferation, noting they shouldn’t be referred to as “pests” because “they’re animals here through no fault of their own.”

“As long as the garbage is there and unchecked the rats will be there,” Byrne said, noting that cutting off the rats’ food source is most critical. “We have a disgusting human behavior problem, not a rat problem.”

She believes “it’s much easier for the city to demonize rats in this cartoonish manner than it is to tell New Yorkers to get their act together and stop treating the city like a garbage dump.”

Byrne’s comments come after Adams announced on Wednesday the city’s first ever director of rodent mitigation — or “rat czar” — would be Kathleen Corradi.

She was hired months after a job posting went up seeking a candidate “somewhat bloodthirsty” who would turn to “wholesale slaughter” to reduce the rats running around.

Adams has said he’s “fixated on killing rats” and hates the vile vermin, calling them “public enemy number one.”

On Thursday, PETA said its president Ingrid Newkirk spoke to Rachel Atcheson, special advisor to the chief of staff in Adams’ office, about how the rat population can be reduced in a less cruel way.

“We are in touch with the mayor’s office, but we fear, given people’s demonization of rats, that chemical sterilization (birth control), which is the most humane method short of better trash pick-up and cleaning the streets of human-created food trash, takes time and therefore is deemed too slow in instant gratification and rat carcasses,” Newkirk said in a statement.

“If killing is the goal, more rats will come to fill the void and the cycle will continue,” Newkirk added, fearing city officials’ tough talk on rats means “being kind to these small mammals—who feel pain and fear every bit as much as any dog, cat, or the “rat czar” herself—is apparently not a consideration.”

Newkirk said she told Atcheson diligent trash collecting, and street and sidewalk cleaning is what the city should focus on — not poisoning rats.

Adams’ press secretary Fabien Levy vowed the city would look at “every rat mitigation tool and technique” to eliminate the pests.

“Every New Yorker hates rats — they’re dirty, diseased, and degrade our quality of life. They also pose a public health risk to all New Yorkers,” Levy said in a statement to The Post. “We hired a rat czar to expand what works and bring a unified strategy to the war on rats so we can ultimately make progress and rid of our city of these diseased rodents.

“We’re glad PETA agrees with the plans we already have in place that place trash out later and have it picked up earlier, but we also continue to look at every rat mitigation tool and technique possible to see what works best for New York City. While we hope to utilize these techniques without causing additional suffering, our priority remains our city’s residents, not its rodents.”

City Hall noted it has rolled out several rat-fighting initiatives, including pushing for trash bins with containers to keep rats away from food — and sanitation picking up 5 million pounds of trash at midnight instead of at 6 a.m.

Teen Takeover’ terrorizes Chicago as hundreds of teenagers destroy property, attack tourists

Hundreds of teenagers stormed the streets of downtown Chicago, smashing car windows, attacking bystanders and sending panicked tourists running from the sound of gunfire.

"Where are their parents at? That's my question," a woman who identified as a Chicago native told Fox 32 as the unruly scene played out in downtown Chicago on Saturday night.

Fox 32 cameras captured video of teenagers crowding the streets and police seeking to restore order to the area.

Large groups of teens were seen blasting music from Bluetooth speakers and roaming in front of traffic, with some attempting to gain access to the city's Millennium Park, which is off-limits to those under 21 after certain hours, and the downtown Art Institute.

Some teens in the group began jumping up and down on cars, smashing windows and attacking people inside. One woman told Fox 32 her husband was attacked from the driver side of his vehicle and beaten after a group of teens jumped up and down on the couple's windshield. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Hundreds of police officers assisted by SWAT teams descended on downtown in an attempt to restore order as gunfire was reported multiple times amid the unfolding scene.

Police were seen escorting frightened tourists back to their cars or hotels to escape the chaos, and traffic on Chicago's Michigan Avenue ground to a halt as police attempted to restore order.

Police say a 6-year-old boy was shot in the arm near the Chicago Loop and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Northwestern Hospital and listed in fair condition, according to a report from WLS.

Fox 32 reported that the chaos appeared to be another "Teen Takeover" of the city that was planned on social media, noting that a similar scene played out in Chicago last year.

"I understand kids having a good time, but this is simply bad parenting," the Chicago native witness told Fox 32. "We have to do better as parents. Our kids should not be out here."

Chicago police did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.

Ex-Planned Parenthood exec commits suicide after botched child porn raid in Connecticut

A former Connecticut Planned Parenthood honcho took his own life days after police failed to arrest him on child pornography charges — botching the raid by knocking down the door of the suspect’s New Haven neighbor.

Tim Yergeau, 36, the former director of strategic communications at the Southern New England branch of Planned Parenthood, died by suicide on Tuesday amid a child pornography investigation in Connecticut last week.

“The person who died was definitely the suspect in a child pornography investigation and the person who committed suicide,” New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson told the New Haven Registrar.

Five days earlier, members of the Special Victims Unit investigating the child pornography case reportedly broke down the door of Yergeau’s neighbor — and handcuffed the woman before realizing they had raided the wrong apartment.

“They obviously hit the wrong door,” Jacobson told the outlet.

New Haven police’s internal affairs investigators are now looking into how cops botched the raid, according to the article.

“Unfortunately, a mistake was made,” Jacobson said.

“We feel for the woman and we’re going to do everything we can to make it right,” he added.

While Jacobson declined to confirm Yergeau was the suspect of the child pornography investigation, his neighbor, and the state Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner both confirmed that he died Tuesday morning.

The medical examiner also confirmed he died by suicide.

After leaving Planned Parenthood, Yergeau began working at the Long Wharf Theatre in August 2022 as its marketing and communications director, according to the organization’s website.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn the developments of the last 24 hours,” a spokesperson for the theater told the outlet. “Given the difficult news, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

According to the Long Wharf Theatre website, Yergeau had also previously worked for the New Haven Free Public Library Foundation.

Police reportedly said that since there are two open investigations into the matter, they will not release the application for the search warrant or provide information about what was found in Yergeau’s apartment until they confirm no other suspects were involved.

The state of Connecticut can also decide to withhold the warrant.

Yergeau’s neighbor Stacey Wezenter, told the outlet she relives being handcuffed every time she now walks down the apartment’s hallway.

“What if I had a gun permit? What if I came down the hallway with a gun? Would I have gotten shot? What if my 4-year-old had woken up? Would they have shot him?” Wezenter said. “You just don’t do that to people.”

Police entered her apartment around 6 a.m. and began systematically moving through the home with their guns drawn, she reportedly recalled.

“I started running down the hallway, it was just like a movie. They had guns and flashlights on me,” Wezenter said. “They put me against the wall and handcuffed me. I was crying and saying, ‘What’s happening?'”

Officers repeatedly asked her where the man was located while moving through the rooms of her apartment, according to the article.

“I was like, ‘What man? I’m here with my children,’” the mother said. “They asked, ‘Who’s Tim? ‘ and I said that’s my neighbor downstairs.”

After officers noticed toys belonging to her 4-year-old son, they reportedly realized they were not in the correct apartment.

Officers told her they had been conducting surveillance of her neighbor who was the focus of their investigation.

Wezenter told the outlet she had planned to bring a plate of Easter leftovers to Yergeau on Monday but accidentally fell asleep with her son.

“I was planning on going down there and talking to him,” she said. “I just thought that maybe a small act of compassion might help.”
