Boeing 737 Max engine issue will take up to a year to fix, embattled company reveals

Boeing will take up to a year to repair an engine issue on all its beleaguered 737 Max jets, which will delay the certification of its 737 Max 7s and Max 10s.

Boeing has acquired a team of experts to “quickly drive forward a safe and compliant solution” to a glitch that could cause the 737 Max anti-ice system to overheat and damage the engine, the corporation wrote in response to questions from Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois), according to CBS News.

Boeing officials previously said they would have the issue fixed within nine to 12 months, the outlet noted.

“Small changes made to the engine inlet can change the behavior of the air as it enters the engine, impacting engine performance,” the embattled company explained.

“The solution selection process for the potential overheating issue will require a full understanding of safety and compliance impacts on all systems,” Boeing added.

Although the specific issue has never occurred in-flight, the worst-case scenario could cause components to break off the airplane, CBS reported.

“For the safety of the flying public, I’m relieved that Boeing committed to fixing the known safety defect on-board its 737 MAX 10 before attempting to certify and put yet another flawed aircraft into commercial service,” Duckworth said in a statement to CBS.

“I’m also appreciative that Boeing took my concern with the MAX 7 to heart and agreed to prioritize fixing this safety defect in all MAX aircraft within the next year rather than its original 2026 timeline,” she added.

“When it comes to the safety of passengers and crew, this fix cannot come soon enough — and I will be closely monitoring Boeing’s efforts to ensure it stays on track to permanently address this safety defect and keep the flying public safe,” the senator concluded.

Boeing got a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration to continue operating the 737 Max 8s and 9s that are already certified, CBS explained.

The company was initially looking to get similar permission for the Max 7, which was in the process of obtaining its final FAA certification when a door panel blew out of an Alaska Airlines aircraft mid-flight in January.

Boeing withdrew the request after Duckworth demanded that the FAA deny the Max 7 safety waiver.

The company now will not attempt to fully certify the Max 7s and Max 10s until the issue is resolved, CBS said.

On Tuesday, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby announced that the airline had asked Boeing to stop building the 737 Max 10 planes it had ordered and to focus on building 727 Max 9s instead.

“I think it’s impossible to say when the Max 10 is going to get certified,” Kirby admitted at a J.P. Morgan conference

“If and when the Max 10 gets certified, we’ll convert them back to Max 10s, but Max 10 is out for us until it’s certified,” he said.

Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines announced this week that it will have to cut its 2024 capacity plans and reevaluate its projected earnings due to the delay in the Max 7 certification, CBS reported.

Southwest operates an all-737 fleet, and had hundreds of Max 7s on order this winter, the outlet noted.

‘Traumatized’ medical worker who filmed bloody subway mayhem will ‘never again’ ride NYC rails

The woman who filmed this week’s bloody mayhem aboard an A-train vowed to “never again” ride the NYC rails.

“I’m not feeling good. I’m still traumatized. I can’t even step outside.” Sherri Paul told The Post from her Brooklyn residence on Saturday.

“My body keeps on shaking…I’m in pain. I got trampled.

“I’m looking into moving out of New York. It’s extremely not safe for me as a single mother,” she said.

The medical assistant was aboard a northbound A train Thursday around 4:45 p.m. when DaJuan Robinson began randomly acting aggressively towards fellow straphangerYounece Obuad.

Robinson, 36, had entered the subway system illegally in Brooklyn before the evening rush and targeted Obuad, 32,, taunting the stranger, displaying a knife and finally pulling a handgun as chaos ensued, according to cops and video.

As the train approached the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station, Obaud did not pay any attention Robinson, Paul said.

However, Robinson would not let up.

Paul does not believe Obaud should be charged with a crime, but she does not feel he is a hero either. “He was defending himself, but is killing [shooting someone] a good thing?” she asked

Law-enforcement sources told The Post Robinson appeared to have been harassing the stranger because he wrongly thought Obuad was a recent migrant.

As the pair scuffled, Obuad ended up shooting Robinson four times with his own gun, including through the eye, leaving him in critical condition.

The agitator had told his victim that he only likes black people, adding,
“F–k your kind” as the confrontation became physical.
“I’m looking into moving out of New York. It’s extremely

Paul was able to record most of the incident on her phone.

Paul said the city needs to either add more security cameras or more police officers.

“There was no police. It [the incident] was like thirty seconds before the train stopped. Imagine if it was two minutes or three minutes,” she said.

Joyce Philippe, a journalist with ABC News, who also witnessed the chaos on the train and posted a video to X, said Saturday that she was “still shaken and traumatized, but better.”

Target to limit self-checkout to 10 items as stores turn from tech amid concerns of theft

Target will limit self-checkout to 10 items, claiming the move will improve the customer experience and speed up the process.

The Minneapolis-based retailer joins dozens of other retail chains, including rival Walmart, that have limited or removed self-checkout kiosks amid complaints about clunky technology and concerns about rising theft.

The change will go into effect Sunday at most of the Minneapolis-based chain’s nearly 2,000 stores nationwide, the retail giant said.

Along with paring back customers’ self-checkout hauls, stores will expand the number of traditional checkout lanes available.

Target piloted the new self-checkout limits at 200 stores last fall before expanding the change nationwide, the company said.

“By having the option to pick self-checkout for a quick trip, or a traditional, staffed lane when their cart is full, guests who were surveyed told us the overall checkout experience was better, too,” the company said.

Target attributed the change partly to shifting consumer patterns, noting the self-checkout option was a boon during the height of the pandemic when customers sought minimal contact with others.

The self-checkout revamp is coming as Target has bemoaned a surge in organized retail crime plaguing its stores nationwide.

Last fall, Target shuttered nine stores in cities nationwide, including San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Ore., and in Harlem, citing concerns over its employees “safety” amid increasingly violent crime.

New York retailers bemoaned organized shoplifting rings cost them a staggering $4.4 billion in 2022.

And a survey earlier this year found the ability to swipe items undetected was among the reasons Gen Z favors self-checkouts.

Other retail giants have been testing their self check-out options, with Walmart stores closing some of their contactless lanes entirely.

“From time-to-time, our stores adjust the use of staffed checkouts and self-checkouts,” a Walmart spokesperson told NBC’s Today. “For example, a store might start or end the day with staffed checkouts. As the number of shoppers and associate staffing increases, these stores open self-checkout registers to manage the increased customer flow. This process isn’t new.”

'Biden, At DC’s Gridiron, Jokes About Donald Trump Before Getting Serious About Threat To Democracy'

President Joe Biden, appearing at one of DC’s oldest traditions, the Gridiron Dinner, made some sharp quips about his rival Donald Trump but then turned serious about the threat that his rival poses to democracy.

The dinner tradition, which dates to the 19th century, is a white-tie night with journalists performing musical skits and politicians doing some of their own humor.

Biden directed his barbs at his own age and at his rival. “One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president,” Biden said. “The other guy’s me.”

Biden noted that his student debt relief program “doesn’t apply to everyone. Just yesterday, a defeated-looking man came up and said, “I’m being crushed by debt. I’m completely wiped out.” I said, ‘Sorry, Donald I can’t help out.'”

There were many jokes about age throughout the evening.

Noting that Mitch McConnell was stepping down as GOP leader, Biden said, “I hate to see a friend give up in his prime.”

But he, like other speakers, ended their bits on a serious note.

“As I said in my State of the Union address, we live in an unprecedented moment of democracy — an unprecedented moment in history,” Biden said. “Democracy and freedom are literally under attack. Putin’s on the march in Europe. My predecessor bows down to him and says, ‘Do whatever the hell you want.’”

Biden added, “Good journalism holds a mirror up to a country for us to reflect the good, the bad and the truth about who we are.”

Biden said to the journalism crowd, “It is not hyperbole. We need you. Democracy is at risk and the American people need to know. In fractured times, they need a context and perspective.“

He added, “Every single one of us has a role to play in making sure American democracy endures. This year, you, the free press, have a bigger role than ever. Let me state the obvious: You are not the enemy of the people. You are a pillar of any free society.”
